Title: V-65 Fuel Pump Issue
Post by: BudMan on August 23, 2010, 10:53:41 AM
I am reposting this from the Valkyrie Board (VRCC) for one of the members over there.  He said he posted it on the MOOT board, but I can't find it so I'll just put it up for him here.

I noticed some of you own V65 magnas. I am having a problenm with mine I can't figure out. I am having intermitent fuel pump malfunction. It will stop pumping fuel and when I turn the key on it will give a couple of clicks and then quit. I have spare pump and relay so neither of them is the problem. while I am trying to diagnose it will magically start working again. it may run for a week or a couple days i never know. I'm sure it is somewhere in the wiring but as you all know and intermitent problen is hard to find. Any help is appreciated.

Well, he is on the right track as I too believe it's going to be a bad wire or loose connector.  The best thing he can do is when it quits the next time, shoot for power starting at the pump and working his way back to the main power source, looking for where he is losing power.  He should highly suspect any connector or wire that he is messing with, if the pump suddenly starts working while he is messing with it.

That "clicking" you are hearing is the fuel system pressurizing. When the float bowls, fuel filter, and fuel lines get pressurized, the fuel pump stops pumping and the clicking quits. One way to tell if your fuel pump is working is to unplug it and put 12 volts to the wire that is NOT green. Pump should start pumping until you remove the 12 volts. This is how I "prime" carbs after a rebuild.

Sounds like the pump is working normally.

Try this...
1) Disconnect the fuel line before the carbs(good spot is at the joint on the left side). Disconnect the fuel pump relay and jump across the white and black wire and see if the pump continues to pump. It should pump 27 oz./min.

2) With relay and fuel line connected, ignition and stop switch on, check for continuity between the white wire and ground, there should be no continuity. Also connect the positive lead to the white wire and check for voltage.

3) Try swapping the spark boxes and coils.

4) Trace wires

If you are going to replace the fuel pump, before you put a OEM pump you might check at Autozone part #e8055 made by Master. This pump is for a 83 Honda Civic with a 1.3 liter engine. I have never verified this.......but lots of people say it is close, if not a direct replacement for the first gen Magna.
