Title: intermittent left turn signal
Post by: 94 Austin Magna on February 27, 2006, 07:10:12 PM
My 94 magna has intermittent turn signal problem where it goes from working properly for a minute and then the left front and rear signal lights go off with indicator stuck on for a minute.

Then it will correct for about a minute (indicator off and all 4 signal lights on).

The turn signal ALWAYS blinks properly when I turn it on....it just is intemittently off on the left side when the turn signal is not in use (blinking).

Any ideas on what is causing this?

That's a tricky one.

Does turning the handlebars increase or decrease the problem, or have not effect at all? I'm wondering if there's a short that's aggravated by turning the handlebars.

You would have to check the service manual, but there may also be an electronic unit that controls the blinker. It could be going faulty.

Anyone else?

MY 87/88 SERVICE MANUAL HAS A WIRING DIAGRAM THAT SHOWS A TURN SIGNAL RELAY. IT HAS THREE WIRES TO IT. A GRAY, A GREEN, AND A GREEN/WHITE STRIPE. THIS IS PROBABLY LIKE AN AUTOMOTIVE TURN SIGNAL FLASHER. I DON'T KNOW IF YOUR MAGNA HAS THE SAME RELAY, MAYBE SOMEONE HAS A SERVICE MANUAL FOR YOUR MODEL AND WILL CHECK FOR YOU.

gentlemen,

thanks for the input.  There is no change with turning the handle bars and I believe it is a relay as indicated in the service manual for 87,88 models - a few other people have suggested that as well.

I have searched for the 1994-2003 Magna Service Manual online and found it for $60.  (I also found it for $120 but 60 is the best I found).  I bet it would pay for itself over time as my '94 has 45K miles.

I have searched for an electronic online service manual but with no luck

At any rate, I may just chase wires looking for the switch based of the description of the earlier model's relay.....but it would be nice to know for sure what I was looking for if someone had the new manua

thanks again for your input.
Title: service manual at library?
Post by: 94 Austin Magna on March 03, 2006, 10:12:01 PM
Does anyone know if there is a library in Central Texas that might have the 94-03 Magna Service Manual to check out or just review in the library?

I am guessing that libraries are all pretty similar. Our local library will hunt down a book for you from the inter-library loan system. I have done this many times. I live in Michagan and the last book I got like this came from some coastal town in Oregon.

I got a manual for the '82 magna that way when I first got my bike. I wanted a clymer but got a haynes instead. Asked for both but just the one was found. Still had the info that I needed at the time. I have since bought the Clymer

They will search out most anything that a library lends: books, audio or video tapes or dvd's. (I have them looking for the motorman video for me now.) I have taken old bottles dug up from the farm field here to the library and they have researched them for me.

The library is a wonderful resource, don't be affraid to use it.

Hope this helps.

94 Austin Magna,

The service manual for your bike is available online as a PDF. Check out this thread:
http://www.magnaownersoftexas.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=341

You might also want to download the common service manual too as the Magna manual often makes references to it.

No problem Eran. That's what we're here for. They pretty much didn't change the bike so that's the manual I use for my '99.  You'll see some guys selling the manual on CD for $20. Hopefully they don't sucker in too many people. :) Good luck with your signal problem.
Title: 94 magna turn signal switch
Post by: 94 Austin Magna on March 15, 2006, 10:11:27 PM
I think I can get it now just by following wires - now that I know I am looking for a relay switch.

But the Service Manual - in Section 18 Lights/Meters/Switches, it says to reference Section 25 of the Common Service Manual.

Not sure what that is or if you also have a link to it you can provide...but it did not seem to be on the site with the other Service Manual.

At any rate, thanks again and I think I can fix it from here...but apparently there is a bit more of this manual out there in the Common Manual....

Meant to specify above that section 18 references Section 25 of Common Service Manual for the turn signal information.......

The common service manual used to be there.  I'll private message you with some info.
