Title: Cold Weather Turnsignal Failure
Post by: BudMan on March 03, 2006, 02:55:50 PM
My '84 V65 will not blink when it is cold outside.  While I can appreciate her reluctance to venture out from the comfort of the warm garage, alas, there are times calling for sorties into the cold.
The flashers auto cancellation feature still works regardless of the functioning of the lights.  When the signal is moved into the turn position and the outside air temperature is below about 60, the selected yellow front sight goes out and remains so until the switch is placed in the center (off) position either manually or by the auto cancellation feature.  Engine temperature will help the situation, but not correct it on a cold day.
With summer coming on I don't have to be in a rush to fix this for a few months!

My 82 had the same problem.  We replaced the flasher and it works just fine.  Next time it doesn't work, remove the seat and use a blow dryer to warm up the flasher.  If you are having the same problem as I had, they should work once warmed up.  Mine got to the point where it wouldn't work below 70*.  My husband modified a car flasher because the Honda flasher costs over $40.  He fixed the problem for under $5.

My '98 does somewhat the same thing.  When the temp is below about 50 degrees they take up to about 15 seconds to start flashing.  When the temps are normal they work fine so I haven't worried about it much.  I just make sure I start the turn signal well in advance of any turn I make.  After they blink for a while they work alright unless there is a long stretch of no turns on a cold day.  I read somewhere a while back what causes the problem but didn't make a note of it.  I'll see if I can still find it and post it.

Tom, I'm glad to see mine is not the only one.  I have replaced the flasher and cleaned to switch contacts and it still does it but cleaning the contacts helped more than the replacement flasher.

Finally remembered where I saw the discussion on this subject and found it again.  There wasn't any mention as to what finally fixed the problem.  They discussed the relay, and dirty connectors and light sockets.

I'm thinking of pulling the lens covers and bulbs and checking there for any signs of dirt, and it is probably too late in the season for cold enough weather to test the outcome.
