Title: General Starting Question for a 1st Gen V65
Post by: jccbone62 on June 01, 2011, 12:47:14 PM
I have a 1984 Magna V65 that I've just restored and was wondering how long should my bike run with the Choke on before I turn the choke off?
Sorry for the newbie questions but was just wondering how long should it take before my bike will run without the choke being on.  Thanks in advance for any help that you'll can provide.

You should only run the motor on chock long enough to get the cylinders warm enough to stay running. Which should only be about 30 seconds. In cooler weather it might take a little longer to get them warmed up. I have a Gen 3 V45 and if the outside temp. is above 50 I don't use the chock at all. I start it up and let it idle for a few minutes till she is warmed up and running smoothly.

I concur just long enough to idle and/or throttle.  You run the risk of fowling the plugs if left on too long.

Thanks for the information.  I will keep those things in mind when starting my bike.

Jcc, My '86' V65 never really has trouble starting even in the cold, but I know it does not like to run really well untill I have two bars showing on my temp gauge.  So I generally keep the choke on heavy for the first couple minutes then just slowly tapper off until I hit the two bar mark on the gauge.  That seems to be the sweet spot.  I'm not too sure of the actual temp at two bars though.  Also I have to fight myself on the throttle at start up.  I always want to give it some gas to help the thing fire up like an old truck, but my V65 hates that, it starts best without touching the throttle at all until it's been idling for a minute or so.

I generally don't use any choke on the V-65 except in true winter.  Any time I pull the choke at all, I put it on all the way, crank the engine and immediately knock it to halfway, then off as soon as possible (normally about 30 to 45 seconds max).

I have always done similar.  Choke to start, no throttle, then I move the choke down so it is idling without dying.  Maybe just a couple hundred rpm over normal idle.  As the idle increases I back off the choke until it idles without it, or if I hop on to ride off right away I turn the choke off as soon as the bike is rolling.
