Title: Hard Starting When Bike is Hot
Post by: jccbone62 on June 28, 2011, 10:25:09 PM
I've recently restored my 1984 Honda Magna V65 and currently have one nagging problem that I can't figure out.
When cold I use the choke and it starts with ease.  It idles a little low to me but it does idle.  After 30 secs to a minute I shut the choke off.  It immediately dies but I can give it about half throttle and it will start with little to no problems.
After riding for a while and the bike is good and hot, it is extremely hard to start again.  To me it seems to not be getting any gas.  If I let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, I can give it full throttle and it will slowly restart.
Does anyone have any suggestions or maybe someone has seen this issue before.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
Note, the carbs were painstakingly cleaned.  I sprayed so much carb cleaner through all the wholes multiple times.  I had clogged jets once before and didn't want that problem again.

Hard starting when hot is often a sign of vapor lock. Did you also rebuild the carbs and sync them or just clean them because it could do that if the floats are off or sticking. Before I tore the carbs off though a couple of things I would check are the fuel filter of course and the flow capacity of the fuel pump. Check in the service manual and it will tell you how to do it. Make sure the sliders aren't sticking on the choke so it opens up. Also I just fixed a Yamaha for a friend that acted similar and the problem turned out to be that he had rebuilt the carbs and plugged one of the lines that turned out to be a vent line. Took the screw out and it ran good. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with V4's and I work on more cars (which usually only have one carb thank goodness) than bikes so hopefully someone with a little more experience than me will chime in because I remember what a bear mine were to get off when I did them.

When the bike is warmed up what is the idle RPM's. Could be that the idle adjust is to low an just need to be stepped up a little.

Thanks for the replys/suggestions. My bike does not overheat and it does make a little noise at idle and the same noise is a little louder in overdrive. I have 28,800 miles on the bike but I've only put about 250 miles on it myself since I got it running.
It doesn't appear to be running lean or too rich and i've pulled the spark plugs and they are a nice tan/bronze color. For now I currently plan on doing a fuel pump flow test and verify that the pump is doing its best to keep fuel too the carbs. I have two see through fuel filters in line, one before the fuel pump and the other just before the carbs. I keep a keen eye for any possible containmenation.
When the bike is cold, the idle is around 1200 to 1300 rpm.  When it gets hot, I've notice the idle is up to around 2k rpm.  I'm beginning to lean toward something that I may have missed in the carbs.  The carbs were cleaned (thoroughly) and benched sync. To me when trying to start the bike, it sounds like it isn't getting any fuel.

Anyway, it's too hot here in Wichita to do much for now, so I will keep you guys informed of my progress. If you can think of anything else, please let me know. Thanks again....
