Title: 1984 Magna V30, fuel tank capacity
Post by: Ardenito on July 13, 2011, 08:15:20 PM
It finally dawned on me after buying the bike in Canada and riding all the way to my home in Mexico that my (only) complaints about the frequency of filling up, of running out and of the 'idiot" light not seeming to work may be all connected..... even when I ran out it only allowed for less than 10  or so liters to "fill" up and my mileage calculations always showed me getting 45-50 MPG like I should expect....... MAYBE I am only drawing gas from the upper tank.... bypassing the lower tank and the sensor....... hummmmm.... Is that possible? It would have been a deliberate mechanical (hose reconnecting) change to bring that about.
I am writing the previous owner to get his thoughts, advice, admission.... whatever.
Has anyone experienced that? I know it sounds a bit silly but I hesitate to take anything apart or bring it to the mechanic/dealership which is about 40 miles away.... or is there a simpler answer.... the fuel switch definitely does NOT have a spare tank setting.... just ON or OFF.

The biggest complaint that the Magna's get is that the fuel capacity is low. The V30's have a 2.5 gallon tank with .9 gallons for reserve. Combined the tank should hold 3.4 gallons total. The fuel pet cock should have 3 positions. To the front for reserve, staight up an down for off and to the rear for main tank. If you put 10 liters of gas in it. Then you put 2.64 U.S. gallons in it. My 99 does not have a fuel gauge nor a light. So when I fuel up I reset the trip meter. When I get around 100 miles on a tank. Then I'm looking for a fill up.

Thanks for the reply.... I do the trip reset bit but depending on and, for local stuff that is no problem.... well, except a nuisance to keep gassing up..... most  of our day trips here are in low mountain regions in the middle of Mexico where i live... (the Guadalajara region) with great roads but the hills can cause great variance in mpg.... it is just that I would expect that, when i RUN OUT.... i should NEED about 13-14 liters ...... but I've not come near that.... the times i ran out were all on my recent trip from Canada down the west coast hugging the ocean on 101 and #1 where available.... but some of those stretches were LONGggggg between gas stations..... and some one-station towns closed the pumps early and opened only at 8 AM the next morning.... I think their brother owned the only motel and restaurant and i was captive for the night.....Even if i put the bike on the center stand and leaned forward to fill more of the upper part of the teardrop tank i doubt I'd get more that another liter in it but i presume the 13-14 liter professed size (both tanks) means flat bike with both wheels on the ground. Might be good to hear back from another V30 owner but there seem to be very few. Thanks again, ride happy.
