Title: Clutch and general work
Post by: Len Averyt on July 30, 2011, 07:54:51 PM
I went and visited Curtis today and he confirmed my thoughts about the engine vibration on my magna.
In an earlier post i talked about how the engine has a bad vibration at 4.5-5.5K rpm. Curtis noticed it as soon as he started the manga, and driving it down the street and back said it would be a "butt numb-er" on a long ride, and yes it is.
Anyway short story long, We both think its the clutch and since i have had a bad shuddering from time to time when clutching up from a light I think its probably the case.
Anyway any recommendations on a good clutch. 44700 miles on her 32000 pulling me around!
I'm also replacing the chain. the sprockets are worn a bit too much for my liking.

I don't remember the brand I went with, but I did go for the heavier duty springs kit... I have not been sorry for that decision. It is a harder pull on the handle and a bit of a pain in heavy traffic, but very positive pressure on the plates when engaged
If you really think this is the cause of your vibration, then you may want to look into a used basket on e-bay as that would mean something is out of balance

Barnett Kevlar Clutch!  Loved it.  Little harder pull, grabbed with a solid feel at any rpm.

Thanks!
I'm assuming that when I pull the one side cover I will need to replace that gasket as well?
Anybody have any other ideas on anything I should do while in there?

I would replace the springs and (caps?) in the starter clutch while I was in there...

Hard to tell where this is coming from if your basket is bad or warped in some way, might be worth seeing if you can locate a good used one.

I've got a basket and a pressure plate set still that i will never use. you can use it for testing or use it if it fixes your issue. I also have some used clutch plates and discs i can throw in there if you want. pm me and address and i will send it to you if you want any of it.

I would be interested in those parts.
It would be good to have them just in case.
I use my bike when i can as my daily driver at this point and backup as well.

I looked in the oil fill hole and rolled the clutch around using high gear and rolling the wheel a bit at a time.
Can't see any obvious issues, of course I could only see about 5-6 of the 9 plates.

you know what? I just remembered why I have that basket as a spare... I boogered up and broke a bolt in one or two of those holes to hold down the springs on the outside of the pressure plate... you may be able to salvage it or it may not be worth the trouble.  i know the pressure plate is still good with the bearing included and the gear and springs on the basket are good. let me know either way or if you want some and not all, let me know.

Last month changed plates and spring. Not for vibration but slipping. It was past time to get them changed at 50K miles.  I got them from Terry and was very happy.

Very happy with my Barnett Kevlar clutch plates, steels, and heavy-duty springs.  I bought mine from Dave Dodge at the time, not sure if he's still around, or if Terry can get these.

I have a distributor who carries the Barnett, we have an account with them but I have never ordered from that distributor and do not know what our program is. At this point, no access.

Since this post I have contacted to see what their program is, still the answer above is accurate.

i'd be very cautious ordering anything from dave dodge at the moment. There are pages of bad reviews on the v4BBS site with dealing with him lately, taking years to complete promised bikes, taking payment without delivering, no phone calls, etc. Just FYI. (and CYA)

So i'm confused :-?
What does one of those kits usually run?

I'm going to do a lot of service work on the ol magna this next month
change fluids again, including..
coolant
fork oil
engine oil
oil filter
air filter
clutch service
starter service
plugwires and plugs

IIRC about 140 bucks for clutches and springs.

I got those parts, Thanks! I see the part with the issue. The part that has the broken bolt is no big deal. the basket and springs are the pricey part so I'm extremely glad to have them.
I'm slowly getting the parts together to do all this.
I have been side tracked with an engine rebuild with my step son. He blew up his truck engine so busy with that as well.
