Title: Finally got my super out of the shop
Post by: seratt on August 08, 2011, 03:17:15 PM
Yup, finally got her back home on Saturday. Put my 88 Super in the shop last month so they could replace my seal in my angle shaft. Everything seems pretty good so far. The only hiccup was when I first jumped on her, I had no back brake. I got the mechanic to tighten it up for me real quick and took it for another test drive, then I was off.

Well, once I got home I realized two things.

1) I can hear a faint whining sound now when the bike is idle. I wonder if my water pump is getting ready to fail. It seems to be coming from that area. Any ideas??

2) My idle was kinda low. It usually sits around 1100, and she was idling around 600. I turned the idle screw as far as it would go, and now she's back up to around 1k to 1100. Not sure how to go about fixing this one. Maybe it got adjusted for some reason while it was in the shop. I've never messed with the idle screw since I've owned this bike. I hadn't really started the bike for about 6 weeks before I put her in the shop, and then she sat in the shop for close to a month. hmm.

Sounds like a job for "SEAFOAM MAN", huh, Hoot?

I take that back. I rode her into work this morning and the idle was closer to 800, which I know is way low. Also, ran out of gas. Switched over to reserve going down the highway and had nothing. I guess a hose got pinched while it was in the shop, or not connected.

I wouldn't think seafoam could fix my idle issue, but if it will can't hurt to try. I'll go grab some and run it through the tank. I'm gonna pull my gas tank off and see if I can see any lines pinched/missing coming from my reserve valve.

You might want to just replace the line. Seeing you'll have it off any way. You never know if the inside might have seperatd some were. It will also add a peice of mind to you.

Man, I'm an idiot, and definitely embarassed. I realized when I jumped on at work to head home I had the petcock in the res position thinking it was in the on position. Wow...

My idle was also doing better on the way home with a new tank of gas. I'm gonna grab some seafoam tomorrow and run it through. See how she does after that.
