It is time for me to replace the front and rear tires on my V65, they are the Dunlop D205 Sportmax. Does anyone have another tire on a V65 they would recommend for semi-aggressive riding? Or have them mounted on a V65 and willing to let me try them out?
Jeff give Troy C. a shout he had a set of tires on his V65 that if I recall he really liked.
A lot of the guys I have talked to love the Avon Azeros for a radial and the Metzler ME880 for a bias ply tire. If you go //www.v4hondabbs.com and do a search for tires you will find more information than you knew exitsted on this subject. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips guys. I read all the stuff over on the BBS board and still not sure whether to switch to Metzler, Avons, or not. The 1000R has Avons on it and it seems to fall into the turns(which is also mentioned on the BBS) so I may stick with Dunlops for that reason since I don't have any trouble getting the V65 to around a corner. Guess I have a little time before I have to make a decision.
I replaced the Metz 880 on the front with a Bridgstone SE11 last week. I have only ridden it back and forth to work a few times but it seems to be a pretty good tire. And it was half the cost of the Metz.
Jeff, if you have not replaced the tires as yet, I just last night ordered a set of Pirelli Sport Demon BIAS ply tires for my V45, which should arrive and get mounted next week.
I realize that you are probably looking at radials, but willing to let you try the bike out at Hot Springs if you are still in the market.
Just got my new Pirelli Sport Demons mounted. What a difference. Only ridden about 40 miles so far but they actually feel softer on these BUMPY Houston freeways. Cracks in pavement, can hardly feel them. You know, the ones that are going down the highway with you and tend to make your bike follow them when you don't want to. These tires are sweet.
Curves, just think and your bike starts into the curve. Very nice feel.
Boy, oil and filter change, new tires, got a haircut and my boots shined. I am ready for Hot Springs.
Can hardly wait.
Can hardly believe that it has almost been a year, BUT......
Just ordered another set of Pirelli Sport Demon tires. Tires are great, but I sure wish I got better mileage out of them. Just returned from the Big Bend area and decided I needed new rubber before MOOT Mag. Only a little over 10,000 miles, but they sure hold the road nice. I think the front will last maybe even 5,000 more, but ordered a complete set again.
Must have good rubber on the road.
I currently have the Avon Azaros on my V65, but they are just about ready to change out. They are really nice tires. My previous set were Dunlop D205's. Both tires perform about the same in my opinion. As long as I can find the Avons again, I will definitely put them back on.
Good Luck
Dang talk about resurecting an old post and making me think....
I replaced my rear bald Metz a couple of weeks ago with the matching Bridgestone SE11 to the one I replaced a year ago. Got to say so far I loved it. Rode great on the Wild Hog ride and I damm neer scraped a peg yesterday on a couple of twistes going into my neighborhood, I have never leaned her that far over for fear of the rear sliding out.
What size do you go with on 1st Gens? I can't seem to find the original spec anywhere...
Front 120/80-17
Rear 150/80-15
How about:
Front: 110/90 18
Rear: 130/90 16
Hmm, I would think the size of the rim would be the one non-negotiable number. But everything I can find says the same rims are on the 84 85 86....
Ray's numbers sound right IIRC. The rims from 82-86 will fit. The spoke pattern changed in '84. I have another set of '82 rims in the garage that are eventuly going to go on the Wing.
Kerry, do you happen to know if Sabre wheels will fit on a Magna? The wheels I have are from a V45 Sabre (Ithink). I would check it myself but we don't have the little Magna any more.
Back to the original thread and based on my observations and my riding style over the past year or so. I did stay with Dunlops on the V65, the bike handles great in all aspects with them. I don't know if they are a softer compound than other tires or not but they(and I) felt confident while cornering and braking. I think the Avons would be a good tire for the V65 also, never a moment of concern with them on the Interceptor. My experience with Avons has been equally nice but I would liked to have been able to ride on some wet roads to see if they handled as well as the Dunlops. I never felt comfortable with the Metzlers on the little Magna, always made me feel cautious and wondering if they were going to slip again.

I think they will on the V45's. On the V65's they require some modification to work but I do know a guy in Leonard TX that has Sabre wheels on his V65 Magna.
