Title: Rotella T6 + Transmission chunking
Post by: swamprat5605 on October 12, 2011, 01:06:05 PM
I recently changed my oil from Rotella T triple protection 15w-40 dino oil to Rotella T6 5w-40 synthetic oil and I have noticed a significant decrease in the transmission's clunking sound when shifting. I had read previous posts that stated this same thing, but I did not expect there to be as much as a change as I have experienced. All I can say is wow. So for anyone who wants an easy way to reduce the clunking transmission sound, use Rotella T6 during your next oil change. For the record, I have a '96 magna with 14k+ miles on it with a stock clutch.

First I have heard about this, I would not think a change of oil would make that kind of difference but good to know.

What I always find is any fresh oil change decreases the clunk and then in increases with time as the oil ages, even with the same type oil..
I'm not saying one oil vs another does not decrease the clunk, just that any new oil seems to decrease it more than older oil..

I never can tell the difference in old vs. new oil in relationship to how my bike shifts. I have tried to see if I can notice a difference, but can't.  It probably has something to do with how often I change my oil, which is usually before every 3,000 miles.

I can tell the difference from new and old oil. I use Rotella T (blue). On Brenda's bike I will keep using it.
In the Magna will us something different next time. It feels like it is slipping a little with speed shifting.

I have also noticed fresh oil seems to quiet my valves but it usually lasts less than 1000 miles.... before one or two of them start to speak up...

Yeah, that would be the difference, I change my oil once a year, whether it needs it or not. ( By your standard, it really needs it!)
