I would like to have changeable exhaust end-caps, quiet ones for trips and louder ones for around town and weekend riding.
My question is the best way to fasten the end caps to the muffler that are easily reusable. Rivets have to be drilled out and the pieces fished out of the muffler, sheet metal screws may vibrated out, not sure. Maybe some type of hard plastic/nylon screws that would stand up to the heat, prefer black so paint is not involved.
So what are you thinking.. plate on and plate off, or are you thinking a plate with resonator and one without?
What about..
1) Some type of captive nuts that clip? (see attached)
They make them for equipment racks.. I used them on my wife's Sabre side covers because Honda had some stupid plastic push nuts which was a very poor design. the clips have a little high spot where they clip so they hold the nut in place, so they don't just fall off.
2) If you had a very talented welder, they could probably tack weld some nuts on..
Let me know what you come up with.. as I MAY be doing a muffler mod soon..
Harry has the idea, weld up the tabs some and tap em!

I don't know what the tabs look like, but could you just tap them to a larger size as they are??
Didn't think about those Harry.
With a gap between the end-cap and the muffler, I wonder if leakage would be an issue.

A little high temp RTV would fix that, but might defeat the purpose of interchangeability..
When I removed my end plates the first time to drill holes in the "baffle" I tapped the holes where the rivets were.
I used allen head black bolts to remount. I've removed and reinstalled a few times without issue. A dab of hi heat black paint keeps the bolts looking nice all season.

Sounds like a good idea, I was wondering if the metal was thick enough to tap and if the screws would vibrate out, guess I could use locktite on the threads if vibration is an issue.

Red loctite is permanent, blue has a service temperature spec to 300F. I am not sure how hot the exhaust gets. Anyone know??
The end plates are thick enough to tap, and what vibration? I don't use Locktite; the carbon from the exhaust holds them in place.
Good to know, we will work on this.
