Title: Clutch fade
Post by: hootmon on April 02, 2012, 07:14:43 PM
My wife and I went to a bike event on Sunday and the had a slow race contest..
Afterwards, my wife asked me to work with her to prepare to compete in a future event...

We were practicing tonight and after a while, I got some serious clutch fade on my Magna. What I mean be this is I had at least an additional inch of play at the end of the clutch handle...
I was heavily using the friction zone technique, so I guess I got the clutch plates pretty warm...
It seems to have returned to normal, so all is well..
I wonder if Kevlar would perform better, I'm sure it would...
Future upgrade on the list...

Does the same thing.

Mine took many miles and a day or so to come back.

Funny, I never had the issue on the replacement clutch on the yellow bike...
Just had the issue with the rear brake on the dragon...

I thought I was in for a set of new springs, I may have put new ones in after all, too far back to remember.

I would think that the Kevlar clutch would make the slow race a little harder since I've heard they're, for lack of a better word, grippier.

On the other end of the spectrum, my 1G Magna had the clutch blow up while trying to roach the rear tire before a 'fast' race   There were pieces of friction plates all throughout the engine.

Magna Man 84: what did you learn from this experience? I've never (nor intend to ever) do a burnout with my 3rd gen Magna. I hope you fixed it up and still riding.

Don't feather the clutch :P

It gave me a good excuse to pull the engine and paint it since that poor bike had been neglected for years before I got it, although it wasn't exactly good timing for it.  Put new cam chain tensioners in it too, but it still has a rattle.  Its currently in my garage and has been sitting ever since I bought the 3G in 2005.  Needs a good carb/tank cleaning and then it will be up for sale.

Allen, is that you doing the burnout?  HAHA
