Title: Electrical or Mechanical
Post by: Ingramml on May 10, 2012, 04:23:23 PM
For the last week or so I have had an unusual problem. When ever I hit a bump my RPMs drop, about a second later my engine brings them up to normal. there is a loss of power but not a total loss. I have added sea foam thinking it was my carbs. I am not sure were to start so I figured I would see what other think before I just start taking stuff off.

I wouldn't think it was the carbs hitting a bumb shouldn't affect them, problem more in the line of something electrical, I would look for a loose connection.

I agree it's probably electrical.  It could be any one of the cut-off switches too (like the kickstand).  I know he said it wasn't a total loss of power but a total loss for a very short period of time might not look like a total loss, especially with the motor being driven by the wheels.

Did you check your blinker fluid? Sometimes that can cause odd issues...

That could be one of those terrible intermittent problems that you may not find until it fails.
Hopefully it will not fail on the road.

I had a problem simular to this a while back. It turn out to be a build up of road dirt in the kick stand. It allowed the stand to come up and make contact with the switch enough to close the circut. But not completly closed. I would hit a bump and the stand would drop down just enough to open up the circut.

I had the exact same symptoms a few years ago. Turned out it was a loose cable on the negative terminal.

I don't think my kick stand has any sort of electrical wiring. I have 1st magna. I will check my wiring schematic to make sure. I will check the battery cable and connections.

Check battery and other major electrical connections. Good luck.

If you put the kickstand down with it in gear does the engine die? I beleive it will I know my 86 would.
