Title: new member - carb questions
Post by: Imabass on May 14, 2012, 11:45:38 PM
sorry for new post. I'm working from my cell as my laptop is down. I would say that I am somewhat new to these magnas but not bikes in general.  I have a rigid cb750 sohc, 1975 amen savior cb750, 06 vtx1300r, 97 vf750, and currently building a big bore cb750 sohc w/ turbo and efi.. My rigid and turbo bike are running a modified 94-03 vf750 front end and wheels. I really liked the clean look of the magna wheels and front end.

ok about my questions... Its a 97 engine in 94 frame that is all stock. The carbs are from a 94 with jet kit. Stock intake and stock exhaust with the baffles removed.  I bought the basket case for my gf to learn on.  So I  got most of the work done but having carb probs.  I have removed the carbs and inspected the bowls and quickly identified the problem. Carbs are gunked up from stale gas.  I have completely disassembled one carb and run it through my ultrasonic cleaner with vinegar. Now it looks like new.

I have 108 jets. What was stock? These are these are the same type of jets that my cb750's run and I have 120's in my stock bore engine and 125's in my other. 108 seems tiny.
where can I get gaskets and o rings?  I don't need the slides but the small rings and bowl gaskets.
where is the port used to sync these carbs?  I have homemade vac gauge manifold that I use on my cb750's but not sure where the get hooked up on these.

102/40 is stock jets on a Magna..

With 108's you are probably running rich..

105/42's are a pretty good set up..

I've seen gasket kits for the carbs on e-bay and such, but they are about $25 for each carb..

Good luck with your project.. When she is running right, you will be very happy with her...

Others will chime in and Thanx for the pix..

Hoot's given advice on the stock setup, but be sure that your 108s are Keihin jets.  If someone installed a Dynojet kit, then they use 108s, but are different then the Keihin 108s.  If your diaphrams are drilled, then you have a DJ kit installed.

Are you sure you need a gasket/oring kit?  Seems that very few need to re-ring the 3G Magna carbs,,,, yet anyway.  If you do need/want them, any of the on-line Honda parts places should also have gasket sets/orings.

I understand you took apart the 1 carb in order to run it through your cleaner, but it also seems that few need to disassemble the carb set and a good "aerosol cleaning" works fine.  But if you're comfortable with disassembling that mess, have fun!

I've never needed to sync my carbs, so I can't answer where the vacuum ports are.

The vacuum ports can be identified by looking for the one that's used to connect to the vacuum petcock.  I believe that is on cylinder # 4, which should be the right front.  Speaking of that, it's something else to look at if you haven't already.  The internal diaphragm can go bad and cause fuel supply issues.  A rebuild kit can be had for around $35 but it's no listed for all years in the parts fiche.  Just look under the 1999 or 2000 and you'll find it ... they're all the same so no worries.

these carbs were sitting many years after a wreck that a friend had. Jets were clogged with the Carmel like residue.  I first tried the aersol method but ran very poor on the front 2 cyc.  Dynojet kit was installed in these.  I will swap jets down to 105 as I have tons of those from my old cb's.. The bowl gaskets were kinda crusty but I will boil them in wintergreen oil along with the manifolds to loosen the junk up.
I have no concerns taking carbs apart.  I have taken the racks of cb750 carbs apart many times.  I'd guess that I have rebuilt more than 50 carbs in the past few years so its not foreign to me.
I will hopefully get the job wrapped up tonight.

If it is the DJ 108s, you are fine, as those equate to the 105 Keihin if I remember the conversion correctly.  Just verify that the needle clip is in the right slot, as the DJ instructions apparently did not document it correctly.  I think if you search on here you'll find the right clip setting, or maybe someone with a better memory that I will chime in.
