After MM10, I have many ideas on how I'd like to make my Magna better. There are little things that it needs.
Apparently the front, port fork seal is leaking again. I'd like to get some progressive front springs installed. I'd like to relocate my rectifier. I'd like to see if I can fix my turn signal switch. I'd like to see if I can get my starter button working better. I have a feeling that my bike needs to be jetted or have shims installed.
So I'm putting a call out to request a wrenching session. I'm located in the DFW area, but I'll happily travel anywhere (on a weekend) to attend a wrench session.
Just adding my name to the list. Needing to re-jet the carbs for me. Also in the DFW area (NRH).
I will hold one.. Cant this coming weekend, but maybe the following saturday 30 june..

Excellent!
But you have to bring atleast 10 or more MOOT members/friends with you!!!!!!

I can definitely try to bring that many, but what can I tell them is the incentive? Dancing girls? Barbecue? Palm readings?

How did you guess!
BBQ could be arranged, I do have an smoker...... If folks are willing to pitch in and give me a heads up as to how many are coming I could fire up the smoker.....??????
If I was closer, I'd be there in a flash! I can use the knowledge, but glad you are helping out fellow riders!
When you come to Nova Scotia, look me up. Guaranteed all the lobster (hard shell Atlantic) you can eat, and a few (?) beer if you care.
Cheers!

I'm not so much on beer but Lobster, I'll be all over that, now if we could just make it up there.

What should I get (parts wise) to accomplish some of the above? Progressive springs? Shims/jets?
Okay, Nova Scotia, is that East coast or West coast...?
Brandon,
The Short List
1. Progressive Springs
2. Fork Seals - recommend OEM
3. Jet Kit from Dave Dodge or purchase jets and one of us may have shims, in a pinch shims can be retrieved locally.
Are you running a stock setup, do you want to install a K&N Filter (some like them and some don't, your preference).
Bring a couple of cans of the spray carb cleaner, I like the Berrymans B12, just make sure it works or you will be doing more grunt work than necessary.
End plates on your exhaust can be drilled easily for a little sound out back if you like.
Fork oil, I think stock is 5 wgt, I run 15 wgt, you will have to refer to the manual to see how much is needed, I forgot.
What is wrong with your switches, do you need new or refurbish what you have?
Good deal, I will order my jet kit and K&N today.

The turn signal switches are tough to throw, and don't always cause the turn signals to engage. It *may* just need to be opened up and cleaned/greased. The starter switch works sometimes, and others it doesn't. I just have to keep hitting the starter switch until it works. I'm hoping that can be refurbished/cleaned/greased/etc.

Looks like I have some shopping to do when I get home tonight. Does anybody know the better places to get these items? Can I get them all from one place?

I have Vance & Hines pipes, so I'm guessing that there isn't anything to drill. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

I don't know what filter my bike already has. What are the benefits and detriments to a K&N filter?

Which weight would be better for a heavier rider? ;-)
My guess the switches can be taken apart and cleaned that will proably fix them, advantages of a K&N filter breaths better also can be cleaned and reoiled instead of replaced cost more but will last forever. vance and hines pipes no need to drill, best place to get the springs from Terry, cli-max ridinging gear he has the best price. fork seals make sure you also get the wipers try ebay or bikebandit. fork oil the heavery it is the stiffer the ride. Jets if you want to replace them jets-r-us is a good place, shims almost sure that Greg has some if he doesn't I do. You will need 2 quarts of fork oil.
I do have shims, those will not be needed. Jets covered by Jerry, 105's will be just about perfect. Springs, you will need to order them and I personally prefer 15 wt, however 10 is stock, and you can mix to make custom weight if you like.

Can I reuse the dust seals that are already on the bike? They were replaced about 2 months ago.

I went to jetsrus.com, and browsed to Honda Magna, and now I see slow and main jets in various sizes. Greg mentioned 105 jet (I'm guessing that's the main jet), but do I need a slow jet as well? And I'm guessing I need a set of four for whichever jet I get, correct?

Thanks, I'll get some 15 wt.
Yes you can reuse the dust covers, 105s or the main jets 42s are a good replacement for the slow speed jets and yes you need 4 of each.
You might want to research the spring spacer lengths and materials to use if you want to mess around with the spring pre-load. If I remember correctly the Progressive instructions supply some PVC, but if you want to add some preload to the springs, you'll need either some metal pipe or a chunk of Schedule 40 PVC (the thicker waller PVC...) and adjust the length.
I think I used 5.75" for my spacer length along with 15wt. oil. I am also a heavier rider and wanted the higher wt. oil and a bit more preload on the springs. I'm happy with those.
hmmm, I used the carbjet calculator with K&N and stock exhaust with baffles removed and it said 110's and 42's with 2 shims per slide. Should I get the 105's just in case or should the 110's be fine? Thanks

Are you on a stock setup? 110's have shown to be too rich in these parts. If you wanted 108's I could swap my 108's for 105's.... lol
I need a carb slider/diaphragm for one of my Magna's, I believe one of mine is not seating well and need to find one or swap mine from a spare carb.
Dang. Current jets are stock on mine. Guess I better order the 105's today.
Not all jets are created equal. But the major brand jets sizing is more industry standard..... Taking that into consideration 110's are WAY too rich.
107.5's maybe, maybe, but we have had very good luck with the 105's..
Thanks, Ordered the 105's from carbjetkits. So I should be ready for the session. Will have 4 spare 110's. Four 105's and four 42's along with shims for install. Just finished reading the jet research you guys did back in 09. K&N filter is on the way and gonna grab some new plugs as well.

Is your setup sufficient for somebody who is 230 lbs.? And I'm guessing that's 5.75" per fork, correct?
Look on this thread for more progressive information. I did mine longer but I can't remember how much longer than progressive recommended, I would have liked the 5.75 but the caps were difficult to put on so I think I went a little shorter.
Look under Progressive

Brandon, one thing I should give you a heads up on. When referring to the oil level in the shocks, it seems the world is inverted. They are really talking about measuring the air at the top of the oil. I use a ruler or yardstick which I fit in the center of the tube to get the oil level right. Thus a lower number is actually MORE oil -- go figure!
I guess this is because it is so hard to measure the level from the bottom of the strut, since the spring is in the way, but it had me going for a while.

I'm pushing 250, so I'd think the answer to your question is yes. Do note that I am running a set of vtx1300 shocks in back to, so the ride on my Magna is definitely on the firm side.
have fun guys! Let us know how all the projects turn out!!!!
So is this really on for this Sat? If so I will get a trailer. Just needing an address and time.
Yes it is on for this coming Saturday. Garage opening up at 09:00.
I need strong confirmation if your coming and I am going to fire up the smoker????.... Also a confirmation you are pitching in, thank.

Salt Water Fish Fry
I should be able to make this also. Salt water fish I don't think so.
If somebody cooks it, I'll eat it. If it's seafood, I may only nibble. And I can't help out food/money wise this time due to an unexpected vet bill. Oh yeah, it's Greg's garage, but I don't know where that is. If you know, PM me please.
I'm thinking ribs - not my salt water fish! Even though I do have 1 pretty big shrimp! ;)

Address received. Going to clean the engine compartment tonight to make it a little easier to start working on in the morning. Looking forward to meeting you guys. Will be bringing the bike on a trailer to keep it cool. I will be bringing K&N, Carb Jet kit, D-shape tool, 3 bottles of carb cleaning spray, very basic tool kit, $$ for food. Is there anything else I should bring?
I will not make it.
Been a crazy week, sorry I could not reply.
Garage will be open 0900 or whenever folks show. We are firing up the smoker for ribs, and whatever else Kristi adds to it.
Come if you can!
Got a bunch of stuff done on 2 bikes and had a great lunch, once again thank you Greg and Kristi for your hospitality.
Wrench sessions are always great. Two carb jobs, front fork overhaul and cleanup.
Thanks for the outstanding food Kristi & Greg.
I know two Magna owners that went home smiling.
I've only put about 50 miles on the bike coming home from Greg's, but already I can tell it is *much* better. I was afraid to get on it hard to test the new throttle responsiveness since it was dark by the time I headed back, but there's always tomorrow. Thank you Greg and Kristi for hosting the shindig and putting up with how bad I was smelling there towards the end. Thank you Jerry and Jeff for helping me and thank you *very* much to Dave.
When we got my forks apart we noticed that not only did we need new dust covers, but also that the slide and guide bushings were bad. The closest place I could locate those parts in-stock was in Allen and Grapevine. Dave rode over 120 miles to pick up these parts for me so I could get my bike fixed correctly.
Thank you everybody, this was great. And even if my bike isn't sick I want to be at the next wrenching session!
Good to hear Brandon, wish I could have been there.
I'll second what Dave said. Always fun to go to a wrench session, you never know what you might learn. Sorry I couldn't stay for all of it but I'm glad to hear Brandon is happy with his repairs. Like always to was great to visit with MOOTsters again and meet a new member David. A huge thank you to Greg & Kristi for hosting and serving up some good eats! If you haven't been to a wrench session you don't know what you are missing out on!
It was great meeting all that attended. I really appreciate the help and the passing of knowledge. The ride difference is night and day and springs are on the way to complete the transition. Looking forward to future rides/events with the great group.
Had a blast working on Magna's! We cleaned and tweaked 2 sets of carbs with jet changes and adding shims etc. Rebuilt a set of front forks with progressives and new goodies.
THANKS DAVE! Much appreciated for stepping up and volunteering to make the parts run. This has happened a couple of times that we open up forks and find bad bushings, guess I need to stock in house a set of bushings and seals etc so we do not have to worry about making a parts run.
Next wrench session I am planning to ACTUALLY work on my OWN bike...... I am going to need some help with pulling the front of the Valk apart to do springs etc on the beast..
sounds like the wrenching session was a good success!

Yeah, so I *ordered* the K&N filter on June 20th around 19:30 CDT, got notice (via email) that it shipped on June 22nd around 12:30 CDT, but the filter didn't arrive until today. So it took 18 days to have this shipped to me! Or 12 business days. In fact, I look at the packing slip and it's dated July 3rd.
So if you order from autoplicity.com, I suggest you anticipate a *very* long shipping/processing period.
Brandon, if you would have order that with your progressive springs they both would have arrived at the same time. 8-)
