Title: Austin wrench session Saturday 7/14
Post by: v4_jeff on July 08, 2012, 01:53:43 PM
I have some work to do on my new purchase, should have all the parts by this coming weekend. Anyone interested in making it a party? I'm in the North Austin area near Braker & Metric.

Jeff, if you would prefer, you are welcome to hold the wrench session at my place -- about halfway between Oak Hill and Driftwood.

I have a lift, complete with weight redistribution device of my own making, shop air, torque wrenches, all the tools you can need, etc.  I own two '96 Magnas, and have replaced the front springs in both.  Never taken apart the front fork bearing area, but check it carefully for smooth operation every time I elevate a bike.  I also have the general shop manual and the 3rd gen specific manual.

We can grill some stuff, or take a five mile ride to The Salt Lick for barbecue for lunch.

Of course, everyone who would like to come is welcome to my place, just as they are to yours.  Your choice, I don't care.

I'm about 4 hours away, and I don't know if there's anything I need done to my Magna, but I'd like to come.

Bonus:  I'm only the back-up on-call that weekend!

I have most of that stuff... except the shop air... and the grill... and the proximity to Salt Lick... Your place is looking better and better.  :-P

I'd rather do it at my place just in case I can't get it all back together in one day. The only way I have to transport the bike is to ride it, so if I can't finish in a day I'd be looking for a ride home. I should be able to do everything in a couple hours but you never know what you're going to find once you're in there, you know how it goes...

One thing I could use is a fork seal driver if anyone has one they could bring with them or allow me to borrow. I'm going to check with Cycle Gear and Woods to see if they might have one, but I'd rather borrow than buy if one is available. Hopefully I won't be needing it again any time soon! (Did I just jinx myself?)

The more the merrier, man! If you're down for the ride I'm always down for meeting other Magna freaks... ahem.. I mean enthusiasts. Bring a laptop if you need it for on-call duty, I have WiFi available.

If you cant find a fork seal driver, go to Home Depot or such, and buy some schedule 40 PVC (forks are 41mm do some math) and cut it longitudinally to make clam shells about 6" long each.  Tape these around your fork tube and drive the seal home.

I *may* not be able to go.  I've probably got some people heading over to look at my Goldwing and I've got some house viewing to do (Gonna move in a few weeks, but where?).

Hey Brandon -

Sorry man, I didn't get any interest in a wrench session and I had an invite to play some golf this morning, so I knocked out the fork seals last night and shot an 81 today (WHAT?!). Maybe we should organize a ride or a get together somewhere down here. After all, if nobody needs a wrench session that means their bikes are all ready to go, right?  :-)

If you organize a ride/meet down there I'll try my hardest to go.  My time (and funds) may be a little limited for about 1.5 months as I'm gearing up to move.  Hey, I can even visit my friend down in Houston so I can be half-as-close to Austin as I am now.
