Title: noisy head ?
Post by: punchy on August 12, 2012, 06:59:55 AM
hi all...ive recently noticed that after a run and the engine is hot, there seems to be a lot of noise
coming from the top of the cylinder heads..but not when the engine is cold or just warming up...its got
10500 miles on the clock, wouldnt think tappets are out as she runs as smooth as silk..do you think thicker oil would help ?... im currently using 20w40 oil. any suggestions please . .

Remember when hot they will make low engine noise.

Does it make the noise at idle or higher revs?
I have had two '94's and both of them make noise in the top end at idle when hot...
I have found some brands of oil can increase/decrease the noise some, but it is still there...
I believe nobody on this forum has found a legitimate valve clearance issue even out to 150K miles...
I don't believe heavier oil will help, as I run 20w50 in mine...
Just the nature of the beast...
Enjoy the ride!

like you say hootmon, i think its the nature of the beast. . . Once sat at idle the noise subsides. . . Its not a worry, i  just thought that not enough oil was gettin to  the tappets but the oil is clean and up to the correct level. . .

Thicker oil just means more pressure, not more flow........  When heated to temps, all viscosity weights are about the same.  But on start up, the thinner flows easier and more, whereas thicker flows less...
