Title: V65 restoration?
Post by: Troystg on January 25, 2013, 12:39:07 PM
Is it worth it to restore a v65?  Are there enough parts and experience still left out there?

For me it would be mandatory to replace ALL the rubber on the bike as it is over 30 years old...  I could do the electrical myself but the carbs would be another issue...

Suggestions?

I restored my 83 v65, I did not do it for an investment or thinking I would sell it for what I have in it. I had a 2nd V65 to ride in the mean time.  Most toys are an expense of which the value isn't what it will sell for but how much joy it brings. It took awhile and about $5k (plus the purchase price of $3k)  but I went all the way with it. There is no new $8k motorcycle out there that can replace it.
For most folks I think it would be too much. But I love the V65 and with the right suspension mods, tires etc. the V65 is an awesome ride even compared to today's bikes. We all talk about it's acceleration etc. and that is the reputation it has earned. Seems what is not noticed or talked about is with the right mods such as: lowering, new shocks, fork springs and most important Tires the V65 Magna is a real fine handling machine, smooth and comfortable. It does it all very well.
.....I've started another.
If you have the time, dedication and $, the parts are out there. Go for it.

I was looking at an 1985 V65 in San Fran with 16K miles on it...    But my wife put her foot down and said I can only have one bike.  Since I do more touring and long trips I will have to stay with the Valk or an ST1300.  After restoring the 1972 Suzuki GT750 and then having to give it back to my ex-wifes family I am a bit sour on restoration...

I'm going to be bringing mine back from Indiana later this spring. You can buy it and you don't have to do a restoration.

Correct, besides you would be the owner of this one.
