Title: How much would you pay to have your OEM 3rd gen Magna seat recovered?
Post by: snoopy on May 11, 2013, 07:34:49 AM
I put out a gig advert on Craigslist to have one of my spare OEM 3rd gen magna seats recovered as I don't have the requisite skills.  I had already purchased an extra large DIY Saddlemen's Gel seat pad insert (http://www.saddlemen.com/Products/K2Mart/SADDLEGEL-PADS/Do-It-Yourself-Raw-Gel/Extra-Large-Do-It-Yourself-Raw-Gel.html) which will be utilized in the reupholstery.  I've gotten one response so far from my advert, and with real leather covering, I'm being quoted $300-$350.  That seems high to me, what do ya'll think?

I wouldn't go with leather unless you keep the bike in a garage a lot and want to do the maintenance to keep it supple..
I have heard people complain about gel pads absorbing heat while the bike is sitting in the sun and dissipating that heat into your rear end for some time after you get on to ride..
SO, if I was going to install a gel pad, I would not let it contact the covering directly..
I would put a layer of foam in between to help with this situation..

Snoop, I though you and I had this discussion already. I wouldn't put a nickle into a stock seat, gel pad or nothing else (that goes double for the Valks). You want to spend $300.00, buy another used Mustang seat as a backup.

Hoot is right on about the leather. It is going to get screwed up something fierce on a motorcycle. You'd be better off putting lizard/snake bellies on it. At least they are outside on the ground.

Sell those stock seats to your enemies.

Perhaps we did, I have trouble remembering what I've talked to other people about, separate from the voices in my head.  ;-)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking when I got that quoted price.

Interesting perspective ...

I have a saddleman seat that has a gel pad in it and if it sits out in the sun very long it becomes very uncomfortable to sit on and stays hot a while. The most comfortable thing to have is an airhawk Terry sells them and the make a lot of difference.

I just happen to have a DIY Saddlemen's Gel Pad and was wanting to utilize it for something, but Smoked is right.  The OEM seat pan isn't worth putting $150 - $350 into to upgrade, even with that Gel Pad.  I'll put that money into an auxiliary tank instead.

Thank you everybody your your input.

You would probably have to buy a new skin if yours is trashed but Rick does an awesome job with the seat its self and his price is right.
