Title: OKC area CB users?
Post by: hop along on May 30, 2013, 05:33:08 PM
Anyone in the OKC area using a CB?  I have a 'fixed' CB I need to test out before leading a big ride later this summer.

If weather looks like it might hold out on Saturday June 1, I will plan on being at the Wrench Session.

For entertainment purposes, pics of my recent trip... top to bottom (cause I can't figure out how to post between pics!)
First picture is Highway 77 through the Navajo Nation in Arizona-specifically Salt Canyon.  On the right you can see the road curve around and disappear... this route was so much fun going south into Tucson that I took it back North the next day.  What a blast!
The second photo is at Petrified Rock National Park off I-40, east from where 77 intersects.  I'm a sucker for dramatic vistas, especially when they contain big rain clouds that I had been luckily missing for several days on the road....
Third pic is at Wolf Creek Pass on highway 160 in Colorado.  The snow waiting to melt there is more than I saw all winter in Norman, OK.
The last pic is of Crazy Horse Memorial outside Custer, SD.  I've never really spent much time there-and this trip was really just a convenient location to stop for the night-but my all too brief visit to Crazy Horse has my mind thinking *a lot* about US history and Native American history.

Project started in 1948 and it is still rolling on.

True story:

I was dating a girl in high school who lived out in the county in the farmland. There was this guy who was always walking the county road just before dark when the weather was nice (and I mean every night). When you would pass him he would  raise his hand slightly up and give you one of those "how you doin'" waves. I don't think he was married and my girlfriend's dad had a conversation with him one day and was convinced he was somewhat crazy.

Sometime around the end of the 70's he passed away. My gal's mom found out several weeks later that he had left $ 40,000.00 to the Crazy Horse Monument organization in his will. Bunch o' money in the late seventies. Something about it turned him on.

I never knew who he was and I don't expect he will ever be on a plaque as a contributor. Just knowing this about him has always been a memory that I have carried for all these years anytime the subject of this monument comes up. So, in a way, he is immortalized at least to one person whether that was his intent or not. That's one thing about him that I will always know.

Smoked U, thanks for sharing your story.  I always appreciate stories like that.

TLR-Salt Canyon was truly a great ride.  Heading south on a Sunday there was a fair bit of camper traffic... I figure it was Tucsonians heading back after a weekend.  That area, though being a few hours north of Tucson, was also higher elevation and easily 20 degrees cooler when I went through mid-May.  Upper 90's in Tucson... upper 70's through there :-)  It was a relief to say the least.

More pics.. one including the CB which is why I went to Tucson in the first place.
Top photo, indicative of the approach to the Salt Canyon area.
Middle photo where I gassed up on the south end (yes, I think it was 90 miles between towns/gas).... and the bustling UPS station.  4 Trucks and a lockup container....
Bottom photo shows sweepers, the CB (to keep this thread on topic) and... the start of my summer glove tan lines

Is that the J&M CB, how do you like it?

Yes it is the J&M CB.  I will just start by saying they have the *worst* technical support/service of any manufacturer I have ever used, next to Dirt Devil after they were bought out by Hoover.   But I digress.
That is why I went to Tucson-to visit the factory site to take care of what ended up being 3 different bad wires and a new antenna, which they would not help me troubleshoot without a visit to them.
I had tried to get assistance via email by sharing pictures of my setup as well, but no assistance to be had.

That being said, I like the weatherband feature.  Correct, LOVE the weatherband feature.  I don't know why I like listening to it so much, but I do :-)  Intercom works great.  CB, I just need to ride with someone to use it more.  I have difficulty raising truckers on the highways so I can't really have an opinion on that just yet.  I will also say that their lowest quality speakers are okay if you have a quiet helmet and ride in a big air bubble.  Otherwise you will want the next level up speakers which can push through the wind noise that can be frequent with an open face helmet.

I should have listened to the warning from the vendor I purchased from originally... they basically said "yes, J&M technical support is really frustrating, they are not very helpful folks unless you can actually meet with one of their people".   They are based in Tucson, have an East Coast distributor in western Kentucky, and go to all the major bike rallies.  Of course, Oklahoma is not near any of those locations....

Okay.  Rant over.  I will close by saying while I was at their factory in Tucson I was treated well and received good service, particularly from their technician who worked on my bike.
