Title: New Stebel Horn
Post by: hootmon on June 03, 2013, 09:22:27 PM
I just bought a new Stebel horn for the red Magna...
Now to figure out where the best place to put it...
I was thinking of mounting it off the left faux air cleaner bolt...
I'm a little concerned about this though as it's a pretty small mount point...
Has anyone else mounted one of these on a Magna?
I was also thinking off the swingarm, but couldn't find a spot that I thought was good without a lot of vibration from the rear wheel bouncing on the roadway...
Any suggestions????

Hoot,
I re-used the stock mount point.  It was clear of my highway bars and footpegs, fit well, and wires were long enough.
First photo shows the 'big picture'...
Second photo shows the 1"x1"x1/8" Angle I cut to fit.  One side of angle mounts to the stock point, the horn mounts at the bottom end, on the opposite side of the angle.  The total length of the angle is about 3.5 Inches.

I've this setup for somewhere over 50,000 miles without issue.

Now the original setup I did... that had issues within 10,000 miles and so I don't suggest it.  It was just a piece of 1" x1/8" flat stock that was heat-twisted 90 degrees so the horn could be mounted same as the photos show.  But it failed due to vibration failure, cracked and broke straight across  .  The Angle bracket is the new and improved version, the shape of the angle resists that vibration failure ...

Humm... I'll have to consider this more closely....
I had dismissed this because I was thinking of the horn pointing forward (for the best sound), but the water exposure was too much, in my opinion, but sideways.. Maybe..

The Stebel is not the prettiest.. I was thinking of maybe getting some of that rubberized weather proofer that they sell on TV in black and spraying all the metal parts parts with that... Anyone have a comment on that???

Hoot, why would you buy and mount a loud horn, only to cover it with sound dampening material???

The Stebel is not the prettiest..
...and neither am I, or my bike  :P
so the Stebel fits right in!
As for wear and tear it does fine, a little regular washing will go a long way.  Not much salt in the air around Ohio and Oklahoma though (where my Magna has spent most of its life)

I wasn't going to do inside the trumpet, just around the metal compressor parts... Should not effect the sound...

I looked today, and where the stock horn is presently is not an option..
I have Mapam forwarding kit and it leaves no room for the horn...
Back to looking on the side... Concern is around leg room...

Well I have decided and mounted my horn..
I used the bolt that holds the water tube on the left side of the bike (I had to trim the angled bracket next to the bolt a little so the horn bracket can be vertical).
I found a chrome bracket that came with one of our bike amplifiers which has a about a 1/2" offset which was perfect and was just the right length with holes already drilled into it on each end.
There is about a 1/4" clearance front to back (between the down tube and the Alternator cover), but enough that it won't rub even with vibration, I think...

I did try it out and my leg just clears it, and there is a little air gap in the back, so I don't think the cylinder heat will be an issue. Also, the horn blast just above my leg/foot with a clear shot.
So all around, there is just enough room and couldn't be any better than it is..

Now I just need to do all the wiring...

I fabricated a bracket like they use on the VTX to mount these and put it on the bottom of my swingarm.  Wired a relay in parallel with the stock horn and they both blow.
