Can we agree to do this June 4th to the 8th, which precedes Father's Day (June 15)?
Do the 3 Sisters area?
Headquarter at Crider's on the Frio?
No iron commitments just yet, but, who is interested in really doing this so I can get a head count to approach Jill Crider for options.
Count me in, who else? Is it June yet.
Count me in. I will also help in any way I can. Dave, just pm me with requests.

I'll be there.
Boy, do I have a great wife. She gave me permission to miss our wedding anniversary to go to MOOTMAG. She has been doing things like that for 45 years; guess I'll keep her.
Rick Frankenberger
I am not 100% but would like to be there, also I would not be one of your count as I have a difficult time sleeping. I could not sleep in the bunkhouse style and will have to source another form of lodging.

You damn skippy. I realized that the day we brought you home in pieces and she told me it was okay for you to get another motorcycle.
Why doesn't she come to the MOOTMaG?
Shoot, we may have to collect money and buy her a surrogate date for your anniversary. 8)

Not that, my body likes it COLD so I turn the A/C down, low like 58 degrees low with a fan, when I travel in a car I bring my own fan to hotels (most people can't put up with the cold), people snoring will keep me up or getting up for restroom at night.
One big room with lots of people sleeping does not work for me unfortunately, unfortunately for me.

Wow, Terry, your fellow cub scouts must have loved you at the camporees. Just make sure you bring some of those frozen cocktails like last year (slurp!). Me love you Daiquiri long time... you party? .
Just for anyone else who has been following this, Criders cabins are not Daniel Boone one room cabins with a privy hole in the middle of the kitchen floor. They have separate bedrooms, full kitchens , separate bathrooms, washer dryer, it's a house.
It's being in the house with your family visiting for the holiday and you have to put them up.
Count me in.

I talked to Jill Crider this morning and she will be taking reservations for her cabins on February 3rd for the summer season. Jill is going to graciously let us jump ahead of the crowd on February 1 for any of us that want to stay at Crider's on the Frio which means we get choice of where any of us wants to stay. She tells me on the 3rd her other customers will pack up the rest of the times available on the weekends in June. If you are going to stay here, you need to take advantage of this situation. You will need to make a phone reservation with her on the 1st of February.
I am planning on renting out one of the 3 bedroom cabins which has 6 beds and opening it up to any of you who want to split costs with me. Example: The cabin is $397.50/night (tax included) divided by 6 beds equals $ 66.25 night. If you are bringing your wife/girlfriend, they get to stay free if you share a bed and I will give bedroom priority to anyone who wants this option.
Other cabin breakdowns:
# 7,8,9: $247.50/night divided by 4 beds $ 61.88/bed
#3,4: $ 220.00/night divided by 4 beds $ 55.00/bed
#1,2,5,6, $ 214.50/night divided by 4 beds $ 53.63/bed
Jill has agreed to waive the linen charge for our group during our stay.
Here is a link to the site: http://www.cridersonthefrio.com/index.htm
Criders does not have accommodations for tent campers/RVs, however, the property next door to Crider's, Yeargans River Bend on the Frio does; http://www.riverbendonthefrio.com/. Rates look to be $30.00 to $ 35.00/night plus a $1.00 trash fee for tent campsites. The gal there tells me they will be opening up for phone reservations on the 1st of February like Criders and it is first come first served. I have not stayed there, so be sure to look over the policies for camping carefully if you choose this avenue for overnight stay.
Since I haven't heard any protests, I am going to set the date for MOOTMaG 2014 as June 4th through the 8th with Mr. & Mrs. Cothern's blessing.
Let's get this thing rolling, troops.
Hello -- Scott Mullin from San Antonio who has missed most MootMaG's for the last several years will be there this year. On my first gen 82 V45.

Good to hear that Scott. Even though times are still financially tight, I hope the word gets out early enough that people can make this event, especially new folks.
Scott,
I'm in San Antonio too on the NW side of town. In the past I've met Lawrence Regan in Blanco and we rode to Leakey together; there is a good chance we'll do that again. You are welcome to ride with us if you like.
Rick Frankenberger
Hey, yeah, Scott -- I second the invitation.
Rick and I have shared a room on a few occasions without hurting each other too bad... If Rick agrees, we can do that again.
Rick, is Crider's the place where we stayed with Jeff and Lowell last fall on the way to Ft. Davis? I liked the cabin, and the location. Quiet, river access. Nice kitchen, etc.
Lawrence,
Criders is the neighbor of Frio River Cabins where we stayed. They are similar; the "house" at Criders is larger and a little nicer. If you can snag one of the downstairs bedrooms, it should protect you from snoring. The upstairs bedroom has four twin beds and there is no room for anything else.
Rick

Yes, I do. You want to commit?
Yes, I commit. Russ may be in as well if you have yet another, I'll see if he commits.
So those who need a full day to ride down do so on June 4th, right?
Russ is out.
I wish I could commit now but I will be a May decision. Leaving May 12 to do a 7 to 9 day, 10 to 13 state ride (east). I'll have to see how far behind I am in life (and job) after that ride before planning the next.
I plan to be there.
But I have a work conference that week as well, so I have not committed to any lodging just yet until I figure out how much of the conference I can skip. I also plan to bring a few people as guests, so the cabins at Criders got a little expensive for me considering their lowest was $200/night and I was probably going to pick up the whole tab for my friends. (I need to get some rich friends, huh?)
If you stay "off" the river lodging is generally cheaper. If anyone else is interested in some of the alternate locations let me know and I'll post up the information.
Looking forward to it.
Post up.

Yes, I will be driving down June 4th with the trailer. You can come along if you want. There will be others.
Sorry Russ can't make this one.
Thanks, Smoked! I've made that trip solo last year but would definitely prefer some company. Anyone else riding down (versus trailering) from the DFW area? I'm in Grapevine.
I will be riding down hopefully there will be others.
I just read the forum and quickly decided to go. Count me in. I just talked to Jeff Atkins and he is interested also.
Dave, if there is room at the Inn, count me in. Wife and daughter going to see George Strait at JerryWorld the Sat. night we will be gone. I really like King George, but negotiating 100,000 people is not for me.
Please let me know if you have room for me and where to send $$ to hold a spot.

I can also get the laser etched wine glass or a beer pilsner as well if you would like one.
T shirts are $ 20.00 S through XL, add $ 2.00 for 2XL or 3XL.
Wine glass $ 7.00 Pilsner $ 10.00

I draw the line at wearing yellow shirts.
I considered red, but went with the blue because it is a lighter color and would absorb less heat. Blue and silver are Dallas Cowboy colors anyway (whoop).
The gal around the corner that does all of my embroidery and T-shirts is doing it for us. She is also doing the glasses with laser etching.

That's the T shirt in my dark closet with a flash from the camera. It's the same reflective vinyl that the mexicans have on their vests that work along the road.
The glasses are laser etched so the finish is frosted glass and it looks more silver to me.
How many cases can I put you down for Terry? You need something to drink those frozen cocktails in.
Hey guys, please excuse my absence for so many months, life got a little nutty on me, as life sometimes does. However, it's left me with plenty of PTO in the bank, and I'd love to burn a bit of it to ride the sisters with ya'll (boy does that sound obscene...)! Does anyone have room left in their cabin? If not I can find something nearby I'm sure.
Dave, count me in for two large tees and two pilsners.
I just made my reservations in Leakey.
Two points Dave, if the (my) economics were better I would buy many of those glasses, except I don't use glasses like that. I would like two glasses but how do I get these home without breakage??
T-Shirt 1 - size 2-XL, do we have one color fits all or do we have black or a darker royal blue? Otherwise what you have works fine.

It is indeed, and that flashlight is still running gangbusters for me. I know there are even better brighter ones out now. This one serves me just fine though, and anyway I rarely feel the need to burn anyone's retinas out, haha!
My light is not the big one, it is 800 or so lumens with rechargeable batteries, my next one, I want 2000 or more lumens with warmer white light output.

Anybody departing from Metromess on 6/5 riding their bike down? If so, I would love to meet up somewhere and ride down together.
44 days or so and counting.
Ok, got you down for a shirt

Just in case there is any confusion, the glasses are pilsners not mugs. The laser equipment cannot properly hold a full size mug in the right position to etch it because of the handle.
Here is a photo.
Do we have a choice between the Wine Glass or the Pilsner?
You can have either one or both and as many as you can afford.
I've got to put the order in for shirts and glasses on May 8th next week so let's get this wrapped up.

I need a XXL Magna shirt, 2 Pilsner and 2 Wine Glasses.
Guys, I am torqued that I cannot come this year. A buddy and I just got back from three days in Leakey environs, and we had a great time.
I thought I would share an attraction of which I was heretofore unaware. A few miles past Concan, maybe twenty miles from Crider's cabins, is a bat colony of 10-12 million Mexican Freetail bats. One can stand not thirty feet from the cave entrance, and they come out right overhead. Pretty astounding. There is about a mile of really bad road getting to this place, so if you go, you might want to consider parking the bikes just inside the gate, and piling on a pickup/trailer for the ride over to the cave opening. It is a slow, dusty ride. Price is $12/person, $11 if you are >50 yrs old. Worth the price of admission, IMO.
Lawrence I wish you would rethink this, I was sure looking forward to seeing you again.
Terry, my oldest granddaughter is graduating high school that weekend, and we are hosting a party for her and 50 to 100 of her closest friends.

Yes, the train tunnel/bat cave is pretty neat. There are a crap load of bats in that little bitty tunnel. The ranger gives a nice talk about the tunnel and the bats while you wait for them to come out. They have those Mexican freetail bats timed down to a few minutes of when they will take off each night. It looks like a trail of smoke going for miles into the evening sky once they get going.
I seem to recall that it is a county road, but it was paved all the way to the parking lot. You have to walk way down the hillside to get to the viewing area. Coming home in the dark is the real adventure.
Not the same place, Dave. The tunnel is north of Center Point. The cave I am talking about is SE of Concan. The old RR tunnel was interesting, but the spectacle at Concan puts it to shame!

In the "for what it is worth" department, my buddy and I tried all the barbecue we could get our mouths around, starting Wednesday evening at Cooper's in Llano. Everyone's tastes differ, of course, but we judged the best to be from "Two Fat Boys" in Camp Wood. Just saying...

Lawrence,
50-100 folks at your place for a high school graduation party? Heck, 10-15 middle aged guys who haven't showered in 3 days will barely be noticed! What night is the party? Did I understand that you are serving bbq and bringing in a bunch of bats for some early evening entertainment? This could turn into one of the best Mootmags ever!
Just kidding. You will be missed. Although I have heard many of your stories, seems like you always have a new one or two that are very interesting. I'm sitting here thinking about you meeting Albert Einstein and the one about Texaco (Exxon?) inadvertently drilling on your old neighbor's land. Great stuff.
Hope to see you somewhere/sometime before MM 15.

where have these guys been hiding? Last time I was in Camp Wood, the locals kept sending me to the Mexican restaurant.
Dave, as you ride into Camp Wood on 337, Two Fat Boys is on the right a block or two before the intersection. There is a bar & grill just past it to the west, which gets more business because, I suspect, they serve beer...
It is set back a bit from the road, and has nice trees in front, with tables for outside dining. They also have inside space.
Only one Fat Boy left at this point, along with his wife. Nice folks.

They live in Georgetown, TX, and are all about touring. Doug rides a gorgeous 'Wing with a matching trailer and Carol rides a little Triumph Bonneville. They're interested in stopping by to talk to some people and snap a few pictures of the goings on at MOOTMAG to publish on their site. Does anyone have any issues with a little indie coverage of the event?

I would like to go to the bat cave one night. We will need to have our gift giveaway at some point like we typically do at a meal one night.
If someone can bring some cats, we can swing them by their tails and see who can toss one the furthest across the Frio.
I am open to any ideas, so what say you guys?
I'll be riding in Thursday morning, so I'd appreciate it very much if you could hold off until Thursday or Friday evening for the bat cave. I really want to see that! Saturday worked well for the prize distribution last year, and that's when the PLM folks are planning on hanging out with us so it'd be good to have everyone in one place for their visit. I'm not sure when they'll be getting into town, but I'd love to be able to meet them out on the road somewhere so they can get some action shots. After all, we're there to ride!
Is anyone passing through Austin on their way to MM'14 with some trailer or truck bed space for a small commuter bike? I'll ride the Mag down, but I'd love to be able to show off the Zero to you guys.
Does anyone have one of those fancy 'point and shoot' thermometers they can bring to MOOTMaG? I've fairly convinced myself, by a seat of the pants observation, that my Magna is generally running a lil hot. I also hope to get anyone with a mechanic's ear to listen to it. I've got myself fairly worked up that it is making new noise, I'd even had the local shop check it out, and after a nice little labour fee tell me it's just fine. (Maybe I'm just looking for a reason to buy a new bike!)
See y'all soon! I might even have a buddy coming to visit from Colorado. He's not on a Magna. In fact I'm not sure what he's riding right now. But he can regale us with some good stories of his 6 week Alaska trip a year or two ago

Hey Brad,
Early after sunup and b4 rush hour would b ideal for me but I'm flexible, as you're the one with the longer haul. To keep you on I35W and out of the construction and traffic, we could meet south of I20 and perhaps catch anyone else leaving other parts of the metroplex. On the southbound side of I35W off exit 43 at Sycamore School Rd, there's an Exxon and a nearby Whataburger and Jack In The Box.
Further south, there's also a Burger King at exit 38 (Alsbury Blvd) in Burleson just past Alsbury Blvd, not sure if there's gas right there. Certainly open to other ideas!
Mr Flexibility
Dave,
Do you think the restaurant across Hwy 83 from the Texaco where we eat breakfast frequently would let us post a note to let late arrivals know which way we went and when we might be back. We could do it at the cabin, but that is out of the way.

Looking to make Crider's about 5:00 pm
If you beat us there, just tell Jill Farnsworth @ Crider's you are with the Magna Rally under my name and she will get you in the big cabin.
Get your ride on; MOOTMaG 2014 is here.
Just suggestions, but, I think Thursday should be a Ride Your Own Direction day since people are still coming in to the area. Friday can be the group ride on the 3 Sisters and then another free day on Saturday to do what you want to do ride-wise.
Friday @ lunch time might be a good time to finalize what we want to do Saturday evening for our get together and prize giveaway.
I would like to leave the daily ride notes on the front door of the Texaco/Subway gas station on the corner of US 83 and FM 1120 in Leakey, Texas across from the Mill Creek Cafe (which is where I will be having a breakfast buffet each morning).

Mary Ellen and I made it home Sunday around 5 pm, a lite rain from north of Austin to Temple, kept it cool.
We had a good visit with friends most of the afternoon and night in a hospital in San Antonio, that is the reason I was indecisive what I was going to be doing as far as riding on Saturday.
V4 Jeff lead the fast group on a ride through the triple three's and Rick F. lead the second half of the day on another loop, nice spirited riding from both. We did make it through Concan, never new that place was such a tourist attraction.
It was good to see everyone again and Mary Ellen really enjoyed you guys and the riding.
Thanks for all you did Dave, putting this together, T-Shirts and glasses, etc.

Left Sunday around 10am, one last blast over 337E in the dry, got just north of Medina on the way to Center Point before the skies opened. Moderate rain to Center Point where I stopped for fuel and a quick bite, cleared for the slippy ride to Comfort, then spotty sprinkles on 473 all the way to 281. South jaunt on 281 to 46 eastbound to New Braunfels, and that's where the deluge started. About 45 minutes in an absolutely TORRENTIAL downpour, finally cleared right as I was pulling into New Bruanfels. Had a bit of a moment on a scary slick exit ramp where I was pumping and locking both brakes to haul the bike down from the blazing 20mph entry speed, but I finally got it stopped. Made it to Gruene safe and soggy for a nice late lunch of the best ribs in Texas. Finally got back to Austin around 5:30 Sunday.

Marty,
Were you able to secure a rear tire?
Yes, the dealer had 2 in the size I wanted and had me out 5 minutes after they were scheduled to open, with a Metzler 888! It wasn't all good luck though, as I hit a buzzard in Smoked U's truck, messed up the headlight. Glad for me it was a truck and not a motorcycle, bad for the buzzard.
Had the other tire (front) changed tonight.
Marty
So many close calls with buzzards, one nearly took me out, they do not want to leave their find.
Good to hear you have a new tire for the rest of the event and the ride home.

Made it home safe with very little rubber to spare on the front but plenty of lessons learned. Thanks to Jeff and Jerry for the company in the rain. More comments to follow.
Marty
Marty,
Were you able to secure a rear tire?
Yes, the dealer had 2 in the size I wanted and had me out 5 minutes after they were scheduled to open, with a Metzler 888! It wasn't all good luck though, as I hit a buzzard in Smoked U's truck, messed up the headlight. Glad for me it was a truck and not a motorcycle, bad for the buzzard.
Had the other tire (front) changed tonight.
Marty
You know what they say in Bandera, "
buzzard happens".
Accidents are accidents. No biggie. It reinforces that philosophy of mine to always have a truck and trailer at any rally out of town. My truck, trailer and tools have saved a few rear ends including my own at these things. Way too much money on the line to have some mechanical issue arise and screw the experience up.
Lessons learned:
Tires:
1. Just because the portion of the tread you can see looks OK, doesn't mean the rest of it looks the same - Look over the entire circumference.
2. With a friend's help, a rear wheel can be pulled in about 10 minutes and reinstalled in about 20- no big deal.
3. Spirited riding and hard braking on chip seal is astonishingly harder on tires than constant speed commuting on smooth roads. A couple of us could actually see the significant difference after a day or two of spirited riding on the Three Twisted Sisters.
I checked my records and had 13,500 miles on the Shinko 777 rear when tread split and cord appeared Friday afternoon (installed April 2013). The Front tire (Dunlop purchased 9/2012) has 19,000 miles on it as I replaced it last night, but was decent until about 17,500 although certainly not for making a trip.
Other lessons:
• A rain suit works best if you immediately STOP and put it on at the first sprinkle, rather than hoping it the rain will pass and not get heavier, finally reaching acceptance after your clothes are all wet. Found my rainsuit at home by the door with the maps I took time to print but forgot to bring. :x
• Chain adjustment (Thanks Hop A Long) – after reinstalling a wheel, slowly turn the tire while checking the tension, otherwise it might show the right tension but then release a kink and be loose. :?
• Smoked U would rather help someone fix their Magna electrical problem, tire problem, etc., more than swimming in the Frio, even two afternoons in a row.
• Our group is made up of very generous, care people and a few of them can do amazing things on the roads or on the bench. 8-)
Dave, let us know about the stein and wine glass prices. I know I owe you some $$$.

Holy crap you got some miles out of those things! I'm pretty happy if I get 3k from a rear and 6k from a front. I got a little over 4k out of the IRC Wild Flare rears and have around 9k on the front with a bit of tread left but significant hardening happening. I might abuse them a bit more though...
Now that it's time, I'm trying to decide if I want another set of those Wild Flare tires. The tread pattern is neat, they're sticky enough for the lean angles that the Magna is capable of, and they're plenty long wearing considering what I put them through, but I'm wondering if there's a dual compound sport-touring type tire that will fit. I'll start searching and let you all know what I come up with. Anyone know of anything that might fit my bill?
I'm kinda' considering doing the CBR F2 swap that I've seen in a couple places, mostly for the braking upgrades (dual disc front, disc rear) and wider tire selection. I'll make this thing a proper sport-tourer yet! BUT I think I'm gonna' need some fresh rubber before I can get the parts together for the swap. Maybe just another set of cheapie IRCs for now...
Look into the Michelin Commander II. I have them on my Magna and VMax. ~5k on the Magna, and ~4k on the VMax. Both still look new. They are advertised to get double the mileage of other brands. We'll see, but it's looking good so far. They are dual compound, hard in the center for long mileage, softer on the edges for cornering. They are a little spendy up front, but if they actually do give double the mileage, it'll be much cheaper in the long run.
Are you using the 150/90?
The only thing that concerns me are few sipes for wet weather filtering of water down the middle, more chance to hydroplane.

Paying it forward, Bro. I must say that that Frio spring fed River was sooooo nice when I finally got in it especially standing under that waterfall and letting it pound on my shoulders.

The essence of why MOOT has been such a great organization. I sincerely hope this economy clears up in the next couple of years so we can get more people involved again.[/quote]

Oooh, likey. Thanks for the tip, I'll take a look!
Dave,
Here is a link to Robbie Maddison's 2009 New Year's Eve jump in Vegas. 10 stories. I couldn't recall his name when we were discussing it at MootMag. I watched it live on TV. I was certain we were about to see death. This guy is insane and has cojones the size of beach balls.
Red Bull paid him 2 million for the jump. Afterwards he said he wouldn't do it again for 10 million. I couldn't make myself try it if an assassin held a gun to my head. A clean head shot would be far quicker and less painful.
It squirm every time I see it.

I put a Michelin Commander II on the back of my bike.. Not sure how many miles I have on it (More than 6K) and it still has lots of tread. I've been happy with it's performance...
I went with it after I installed a Michelin Pilot 2 on the front which has been great. (although it is a slightly shorter tire and throws my speedo off some).
I've always got more mileage from my tires than you are stating.. I've had Dunlops, Metz, Avon's and of course Car tires.. I've always gotten at least 15K out of my rear tires and I'd say I'm not easy on my bike (Although I don't have many turns or hills living in Florida)...
I'd go with a Michelin again, no problem..

yes, you can hear that bike crunch on impact. Lots of energy to absorb.
Nice work. Thanks for the link.

FYI, I was reading about the new Metzeler 888's I bought by default went caught between a rock and a hard place a couple of weeks ago. Replacing the 880 model in 2013, they are dual compound designed to both extend the mileage and the wet weather performance over the 880. It felt fantastic right away, but after going down to the cords, almost anything would be a terrific difference, although I don't think it felt that good when mounting the new Shinko 777. We'll see how they wear compared to the Shinko, and then I'll replace the 888 with the Shinko I've had in the garage the past couple of months and check the new tire feel once again....
Who is interested in some more shirts and/or glasses with the MOOTMaG 2014 copy?
I can put in for a different color on the shirts if we can agree on something else.
Let me know what and how many if you are interested.
I'm in for a XXL shirt (same blue color is good), 2 wine glasses and 2 more pilsner glasses, IF there is enough to place another order for any of those.

Yes sir, I like the way she writes, Good Job getting them to MootMag, too bad I missed meeting them.
Very nice work on the article and the photos. What a nice couple to meet. I wish them well with their future work.
Great article nice job putting it together.
