Title: Summer Wrench session July 12th
Post by: roboto65 on May 25, 2014, 06:51:15 PM
Well Jesse wanted me to put this out there how about a wrench session at the new house. See Tavern anyhow Saturday the 12th  I will be available and if anyone wants to come out and wrench I will have the shop open for you all. I have all the tools for changing chains, oil changes, tires and carbs.

I will borrow my buddys pit I hope  till I get mine built  and we can have a cookout I will have refreshments.

If you are far away and want to come well got 6 acres and plenty of camping spots LOL. I will be over in Dripping Springs the 20th to pickup something and will be back that afternoon so you can show up anytime after say 3 or 4 on the 11th for the wrench session on the 12th.

I have a 3 bay shop with tools so come one and all and see the new place and fix your woes.

The doors will be open around 7 am heck before that probably so come on out and visit and wrench.

Let me know if you plan on being here so I can get a head count for food.

                                                                             See you there Allen

Would love to  make it up Allen.  FYI, I've got a nice NoMar tire changing station as well as a motorcycle lift so if you want me to bring them let me know and I'll cage it up to your place with the aforementioned equipment.

Sounds like a great time to break out the hammock tent!  Sadly I just made plans to take it into the Ozarks that weekend with a buddy from Missouri  :(

I may cage it as well so I can finally use my motorcycle trailer in a bag and bring my ultrasonic cleaner. It has a two year warranty on it so I'd like to use the crap out of it and make sure it's going to hold up.

I also have a carb sync tool, chain brush, and a pit bull stand which is handy for cleaning chains and getting the rear wheel off the ground.

I may have a set of carbs for us to swap out on my bike but let's see what everyone else wants to do first.

Has anyone piped up with repairs they want to do?

My radiator fan is not coming on. If I don't have this resolved by June 21st then this may be my wrenching project.

Jerry,

I'd love to see the Super Magna. I just recently worked on my 99 Magna carbs and the float bowl gaskets were in pretty bad shape.

I have found a non-stealership source for viton gaskets as well as viton tipped float needles. The viton is supposed to resist the ethanol fuel that we have now.

You might want to check this site out and see if they have similar float bowl and needles for your Super. If you're going to go through the trouble to pull your carbs off, might as well give them a good cleaning at the same time.

Jerry,

You might also check out http://www.v4market.com. They have some of the same stuff and may have something specific for a Super Magna.

If you can get a hold of some of the rubber boots that connect the carbs to the head that may not be a bad idea either. I'm not sure how well the ones from the 80s may be doing today. They probably won't last forever. I noticed mine were pretty hard, not brittle, but they were some of the inside edges had worn/broken probably due to taking the carbs off / on because the angle can get awkward and the boots don't always get to line up perfectly.

My radiator fan is not coming on. If I don't have this resolved by June 21st then this may be my wrenching project.
Easy check.. Turn on the key, Take the wire off of the Thermistor on the left side of the radiator (Back side). Touch it to "ground" - IF the fan comes on, the Thermistor is bad.. I replaced one and discovered how easy it was to verify..

BTW, IF you are ever on a trip and have this issue, you can just short this wire to ground and the fan will run constantly (which is better than never).. If you have the time and parts, you could put it on a switch so you could just turn it on when you are stopped...
Title: Re: Summer Wrench session July 12th
Post by: MagnaMan on June 25, 2014, 05:35:25 PM
Thanks, Hootman.

I actually did exactly that... The replacement thermo switch is on order from Partszilla (for $36) and should be here Friday. I went back with an OEM switch since the previous one lasted about 15 years. There are some aftermarkets that are cheaper.

In addition to my other road traveling goodies I am going to add a small pair of electrical jumpers to my bag of tricks just for things like this fan.

I'm hoping I can swap the thermo switch out quickly (put my finger over the hole) without losing a lot of coolant or needing to drain the system. Did you have to drain the whole system or were you able to switch them out with minimal loss?

Jerry,

I'd love to bring my ultrasonic cleaner and some aluminum safe degreaser if you want to clean your carbs. It should be big enough to clean the whole bank of carbs still assembled so you won't have to separate them. We may have to flip the carbs and clean them in two passes though. Rubber and plastic are supposed to be safe for the amount of exposure time to the cleaner.

Let me know if you want to do that.

That's actually the two car garage converted into what used to be a family room and is now my indoor work shop and motorcycle museum.

I can't put any motorcycles in the living room because the Oldhausen pool table is in the middle of the room and the cue sticks would run into the bikes during shots.

I'm still interviewing for a female "backseat", but, there won't be any females living here in the Dave Cave.

Good to see Jesse after several years. Thanks for your help with the Super Magna.

He is the most interesting man in the world.

He once got in a staring contest with himself in a mirror and won.

He doesn't use oil very often, but, when he does, he uses

Royal Purple

I had a great time, yesterday. It was good seeing everyone, catching up and working on bikes.

Alan, thanks again for hosting and I look forward to seeing how you decide to plan your shop.  Let us know the next time you're off the boat so we can plan another ride or wrench session.

Dave, it was good seeing you again as well and thanks for letting me ride the Super Magna.

Jerry, I am glad you let me use my new toy to clean your carbs and I'm glad you liked the outcome. The fluid is sure nice and dirty, so it must have done some good. I'll be filtering it and using it on my Ninja 250 carbs next. Let us know when you get your Magna back together and if we got that mid-range stumble fixed.

Also thanks to everyone for helping me with my bike as well.

Marc, Lawrence, and Terry, hope you can make it out next time. It would have been great to have y'all there as well.

Jerry's Super is still under construction. He and I got it back together, started it up after cleaning out the vacuum shut off valve to get the fuel flowing and it idled fine for a few minutes and died. Jerry got it started again for a few seconds then I had to crank the fuel enrichment all the way up and crack the throttle to get it to start. Next it wouldn't start at all.

We also had a coolant leak from one of the transfer tubes on the head to the block (someone apparently used the tube as a prying surface when removing the carbs in Conroe).

I threw in the towel and Jerry and I pulled the carbs back off so I could tear them down again and give them another going over. We had the carbs off in about five minutes this time by double teaming the project.

I have them back together and Jerry is chasing down the o ring seals for the transfer tube.

We will get it whipped next go round.

Dave. Did you find anything off-kilter inside Jerry's carbs?
Title: Re: Summer Wrench session July 12th
Post by: Jerry G Turner on July 14, 2014, 07:40:46 PM
Jesse when Dave took them back apart the only thing out of place was one of the silver covers wasn't on correctly, but it wouldn't have caused it to stop running. Dave and I discussed it and we think maybe since simple green is a soap cleaner and I didn't think to rinse and blow out the carb before we put it back together that maybe there was some soap residue still in the carb that stopped it up because it quit like it ran out of gas and didn't won't to start again. Don't know that for sure but can't think of much else hopefully when we get it back together after Dave cleaned it again using carb cleaner it will run correctly. I would suggest that when you clean carbs in your cleaner again that when you take them out spray them down real good with carb cleaner and then blow them out with an air pressure hose just as a precautionary measure. I am pretty sure that I am the one who caused the water leak prying off one of the carb boots put when I pulled out the water tube the o rings were really hard and had started cracking so it may have caused an issue in the near future any way I have some ordered and should get them in a week or so. Still looking forward to getting it back together  and seeing how it runs. It was a great wrench session and I enjoyed seeing everyone again and look forward to the next event.
Title: Re: Summer Wrench session July 12th
Post by: MagnaMan on July 14, 2014, 10:19:55 PM
Jerry,

That's why I was asking. I was wondering if there may have been some water in the carbs.

However,  I rinsed your carb bank off with the water spray nozzle until no more suds appeared and then dried them out with air compressor. The air compressor nozzle was missing the tiny tip so it's possible that I didn't get enough compressed air in some of the smaller passages. It's probably not a bad to try a carb cleaner flush but most everything I've read says that water and thorough compressed air drying should be sufficient. Maybe we just didn't get it all out.

As far as the rubber gaskets, I think you'll find that to be just the case on all things rubber from the 80s. Especially considering that the extreme operating temperatures of cooling system. I bet if you do this again you might be to able to use a ratchet strap to pull the carbs up using the frame instead of having to pry on anything.

Good luck.

I'm assuming that you checked the gas in the tank...
Nice and clean, not trash or water in the tank??
If it acted like it was out of gas, was there gas in the carb bowls? all of them?

Well after a lot of sweat, quite a few choice words, a couple of take offs and put back on, and a couple of cleanings my magna is back up and running.
After taking off the fuel shut off valve and cleaning and checking it several times we finally just bypassed it, runs great and keeps running. Once again thanks Allen for hosting the wrench session, thanks Jesse for bring your cleaner, and thank you very much Dave for all your help and taking me back and forth to house several times. I am glad that my super is back up and running with out any hesitation. Looking forward to the next one.

On the second cleaning, I pulled the idle air bleed screws out that you guys missed and blew out all the assemblies with brake cleaner and compressed air. The vacuum operated fuel cutoff is a PIA. This one didn't want to operate properly even with my vacuum pump so we chucked it and bypassed it with a copper line. You just always got to remember to shut the petcock off when you park it.

The cap on one of the vacuum diaphragms for the metering rods was on wrong, so that one wasn't going to lift under acceleration.

Anyway, patience paid off finally and we got the Super running like the champ that it is.

Jerry, I'm glad Dave was able to get you up and running. Dave, thanks a bunch for helping him.

Jerry, I don't recall being around for assembling all of the vacuum slides so I'm sorry I wasn't there to provide a second set of eyes. Or if I was... I didn't do a very good job. LOL.

I just recently pulled and cleaned my Ninja 250 carbs using my ultrasonic cleaner and they came out like a champ using the same process of rinsing and compressed air drying. I put them back on the bike this weekend and got them fully synced up last night. The bike appears to be running very smoothly now. We'll see.

Eventually I will place my original carbs back on my Magna and see how the ultrasonic cleaner did on them as well. But after your carbs I am paying extra attention during the rinsing and drying.   :-o

I'll bring my carb sync tool to the next session and we can try them on the bike. I have bench synced two sets of carbs now using the identical size drill bit method and I find they still need adjustment once they're on the bike. Now I could be doing it wrong but I have read there is always some variation on the bike simply due to age and valve clearances, etc.  The Ninja 250 in particular was much more susceptible to the carb difference than I have found Magnas to be. Probably because there's not a lot of fudge factor on that motor. It immensely ran better after dialing the carbs closer.

Sounds great Jesse. I'm looking forward to it.
