Started have issues when it turned cold. I have a 1996 VF750C Honda Magna. It shifts up through the gears fine and I have no problems, but some times when i start down shifting when I hit 4th or 3rd it goes limp like there is nothing there and I'm just shifting. Sometimes i half clutch out and it catches and starts down shifting, other times I have to pull over and play with the clutch and shifter to get it to start going to 1st. Please help if you have had this issue before so I can make an adjustment or bring it in for service.
I think there was a guy from Australia that posted something somewhat similar...
He decided to pull the engine apart and replace several parts in the transmission...
Here are the things to check/consider, that I can think of...
1) Clutch properly adjusted
2) Shift rod and linkages are all tight and greased
3) I believe LIMagna replaced the actual Mechanism that the shifting rod attaches to with an aftermarket part. He stated the shifting was much more solid - he MAY still have his stock part sitting on the shelf..
If none of these seem to lead to improvement.. You probably have something going on inside the case..
You have a choice to make at that point..
1) Split the case (you or an experienced shop)
2) Buy another complete engine (usually about $400) and swap out the power plant.

Sorry Hoot but I haven't touched my shifter mechanism other than to put a larger toe piece on it (and even that only required removing the rubber from the post). Otherwise the rest of it is all stock.
That said, I would check the entire mechanism to see if something has loosened up.

I remember that thread ... it was the internal shift star. I contemplated doing that but I don't really have any shifting problems that I might expect it to correct.
