Title: Re-start issues after carb/jets cleanning
Post by: aquasition on July 04, 2016, 02:56:12 PM
Hi guys,
Last weekend I decided to pull the carb bank from my 1999 Magna VF750.
I have done this before, so just pulled the old printed step-by-step guide and removed the bank.
Cleaned the 4 main jets (which were fine), but all 4 slow jets were clogged, so let them soak on carb cleaner and compressed air cleaned them all.
Reassembled the carbs, hoses, all connections and all seem fine. Tried to start engine but it did not run.
Starter is turning fine and I am giving it gas through the throttle, but nothing.
Tank has at least 1 gal of gas.
Am I missing anything? How do I prime the carbs, other than via the throttle? Should I switch the gas from RUN to Reserve, jus in case I have little gas in the tank?
I confess I struggled re-connecting the hoses located behind the tank and near the diaphram, but I am confident they are in the correct places.
I think the gas has not yet reached the carbs after trying many times, so I may have forgotten how to prime them, or how to re-start the engine properly after carb removal. Any suggestions would be very welcomed. Thanks. Claudio

If you've only got around a gallon of gas in the tank then yes, you should switch to reserve.  How old is that gas btw?  Also check the vacuum petcock (start with the vacuum hose) because if it's not working, you won't get gas to the carbs either.   The internals of that device also can go bad but fortunately, you can get them for under $40 (new internal diaphragm).

Everything Charlie said ^^^^^.

Plus after you try starting it on reserve with the throttle wide open you can also crack the float bowl drains and see if fuel has made it into the carbs. That might clue you in on whether you're getting fuel into the carbs.

Also make sure there aren't any inadvertently pinched fuel lines.  Its a simple thing to goof up.. and simple to check.
I once spent a day trying to figure out what was wrong... I pinched the fuel line while reinstalling the tank

here is an update folks.
drained the tank and filled it with fresh gas.
using full throotle and half choke and after re charging the battery all night got the engine to start.
engine still shows issues.
it idles fine but a small turn of throotle to bring rpm higher causes is to stall
exaust shows lots of sputtering at least in one cylinder
I can keep it running at 1000 rpm by adjusting the idle knob, but that's it.
if I pull the choke all the wau out, I can bring it to higher rpms....but that's not right.
so basically, I removed the carbs, cleaned the main and slow jets and problem persists.
what did I miss folks? thanks for the help.

Did you put the airbox completely back together, including the snorkel?  Without that, idle is all you're going to get.  The system is simply way to lean to run with the airbox open and without the restriction you get from the snorkel.

I have no reason to suspect air box is improperly installed. the base went in with the filter. all screws went back in. snorkel re installed and secured with that horizontal bar with two screws.
I can remove tank again and re - check but I have to assume it is ok as is.
there was a third needle in the carbs. next to the main and slow jets. the one which needs a tool to remove. I did not do anything to those...should I have? thanks folks

It sounded like you have a vaccumn leak.  I wondering if you hooked the hoses to the tank diaphram switch wrong. Therefore giving you a vaccum leak and no fuel to carb in running position.

I confess I struggled a bit with the hoses between tank and diaphragm and they are very difficult to re=assemble. I will take a couple of pics to post on here, is that ok? if so, I can remove d seat and snap a few so you folks can look at them and maybe there is something obvious that can be spotted in the pic.

OK folks. here are 4 pics. I used flash from cell to help see in more details.
Removed seat and lifted tank about 4 " to expose the area.
let me know please, if something does not look right. Many thanks again.

thanks to TTOOEE I have got the bike running again.
Carbs were fine and no vacuum leaks. Turned out the throotle cables were not re-installed properly and bike was running at high rpm and idle was all messed up.
re-installed cables, adjusted them and adjusted idle. thanks all for the support>!

You're welcome aquasition. I didn't think you needed to pull the carbs a third time to get it running right.
