I am not sure how it happened, but I changed the oil in Betty and have too much in there. I say I don't know how it happened because I intentionally put in less in hopes of topping it off. I am sure that I waited long enough for the old oil to drain out.
The question is, what is an easy way to get out a little oil?
Don't mean to be a pain, but ridding myself of total ignorance is slow.
Thanks gang.
When you put in the oil did you start it for a few seconds to get the oil in the filter and through the engine?
Make sure you button it all up before starting, after say 20 to 30 seconds kill it and let it sit for 4 or 5 minutes then check your level with the bike up in the level position making sure you on level ground.
I would get a non-medical large size syringe (sp?) and a piece of tubing and insert it in the oil fill reservoir, extracting and checking the levels with each extraction. Another method would be to insert a straw, hold the top and then withdraw the straw and empty the straw and do it over again, checking levels.
The question is are you checking the levels according to the manual, with the dip stick fully inserted or just sitting on the crankcase? Check the manual, it gives the correct position for checking.
Do not worry about asking the questions.
Bob
Or very carefully loosen the plug and let some drain. A mess but it gets the job done....
On 1st gens you use a site window. and it is above the top line. I put it on the center stand in the garage. I hate to admit it, but I have been driving it like that and didn't check the level for a couple days after doing the oil change. What's the danger of an over fill and driving a few hundred miles?
I guess I could just loosen the drain plug a little and let some seep out. Don't know where my mind is these days. I actually have some syringe type stuff, Bob. I use it to medicate the horses when needed. The nice thing about them is that they aren't for shots. They are used to give them liquid meds orally and they have large holes and plungers. Probably have some rubber tubing around too.
Thanks all.
