Title: front forks

can I just take off the top nuts on the forks and replace the long springs- or is it more involved--don' want to rebuild at this time--'86 magna v65-thank you

Yes you can.  I replaced the springs with progressive springs that way.

You can, BUT, remember that those nuts are under pressure from the springs underneath and will pop out with some force.
ALSO, I believe the new springs require less fluid and different spacers, SO, you may have to suck some fluid out.

Jack the bike up to fully extend the forks.

You really ought to change the fluid while you're at it. Some forks have drain plugs at the bottom of the forks so you can do this.

Some people even try to flush the fork with automatic transmission fluid too if they're leaving them on the bike but changing the fluid.
