Title: Blackie's carbs
Post by: hootmon on January 25, 2020, 07:54:25 AM
Well, it's been just over a month that the carbs came out of my Black Magna..
I gave them to my local mechanic as I will do seal kits and jets, but I'm not breaking the bank apart to put in fuel rail seals and getting it all back together...
I told the mechanic I am in no hurry, and I meant it, since I have another bike to ride...
I am looking forward to getting the bike back on the road though..
And if anyone asks... YES, I put Seafoam in the tank!!!! LOL
I'll update once I have the bike back on the street..

Do the have the carbs back or waiting on them?

Still waiting..
This mechanic undercharges us every time he does something for us..
I told him I was not in a hurry, and I'm not..
This is the mechanic that, then night before a trip, changed out both rear tires on our bikes due to punctures. He did both wheels and started at 7:30pm and finished at 10pm...
He charged me Chocolate for his wife and 2 shot glasses..
I took the carbs off, and I will re-install them.. He is just doing the carb work..

I guess I'll update this thread..
I got the carbs back today (No they are NOT installed yet)
But I took some pictures.. My Mechanic looks like he did a bang up job, as expected!!!

Are these before and after photos? The photos on the bottom look good.

What are your plans now, decorate your table with them until spring?

No pictures of seafoam I know that must be an oversight. 🤔🤔

Well.. I got the carbs re-installed..
Two things..
My Mechanic did not return to me my choke cable, so that is not installed.. Magna's never need choke anyways, right??? LOL
I was in such a rush, I forgot to check to see what main jets are in the carbs..
SO... I will likely pull the carbs... Again.. I also need to verify that there are 2 shims...

I got the Choke cable back from my Mechanic.. Usual conversation..
The only thing on the carbs was the idle adust...
Well, the Choke cable has a clamp that hold it, and I know I did not unclamp it..
Well, if it's here, it's over here on this bench...
Moves some stuff around... Oh, this Choke cable?
   Yep, that's the one!

I still need to check the main jet size and needle shims..

Anybody have some spare shims??
Thanx

I don't know if I need any, but I would hate to pull the carbs, then need some and have to wait..
I can see if Dave Dodge has some he would send.. I know people use to use a Radio Shack washer, but... Radio who??
If you want to spend 8 minutes looking and find them, GREAT.. IF not I'll contact Dave.

I think I bought mine at either Home Depot or Lowes, maybe another hardware store. Took a caliper and measured to get what I needed that were the same thickness and ran with it.

If I could find them I would need to measure or show you a photo of what I have. It would take me a day or two to locate but i will look.

I bought mine from Ace hardware, probably from 15 years ago, they should be SS but not certain. I wrote something on the bag, maybe a conversion, IDK.

The .020 bag is for the ones I measured that were the same, they went in the plastic bag for use on my carburetor.

The .020 is correct..
They look like larger diameter than stock, but it's been a minute since I have seen one..
I will use this to try to hunt down some locally..
THANX so much for the effort!!!

Hmm, I thought when I had mine apart that the shims were just little washers but my main concern was the jets. I will look for some washers now. Thanks guys.

By adding an additional .020" to the needle, it helps take the stumble that these bike have around 3-4K RPM..
