Title: 1st Gen FAQ/Tips/Mods Page
Post by: kdf9511 on June 28, 2006, 04:53:37 PM
I am going to see about putting together a good up to date FAQ/Tips/Mods page for the MOOT site or possibaly even starting my own site for this.  Hopefuly I will be able to create a site where we can point a newbie and have all thier questions answered, things like oil, tires, carbs ect. plus some of the critical mods like the main fuse mod and the 3 yellow wire meltdown.  I plan on trying to cover the V45, V65 and the V30 .

I was wondering if you guys had any ideas about specific things I should make sure are covered and any info you wanted to contribuite.

Could you include information to help an owner decide if they need an "oil mod".  I have a 84 V65 with 23K miles and I just want a good freeway bike.  I keep the RPMs between 3K and 6K.  I keep to the speed limit.  So never over 80 mph.  I keep acceleration moderate.  I treat the very gently.

Do I need an oil mod?  What can I do to prevent or delay cam damage?

Sounds like if you riding is of such you could probably continue without one, however insurance is insurance.  If it makes you feel better to install one then go for it!

I agree with Greg, however, having said that.....my '85 V65 has never had the oil mod done to it.  Last time I had it cracked open the cams looked great and I've got 86 thousand miles on it right now.

That is a good idea. I know when I first got my Mag, I read all the posts here and in a couple other forums. A lot of questions came up later that had been answered elsewhere. Of course, when they came up for me, I didn't search the sites again, I just asked.

Maybe an index of posts that already answer a lot of questions would help. I know I am interested in what people use for oil, and filter and coolant, brake padsand anything that needs replacing. Maybe run some poles to get the concensus on things. List the top three responces. Or, just have the the mechanics of the bunch list what products they like.
I'm trying to make sense here and help, but I am not sure that is happening.

Again, good idea.

Uh... can we start with: what's the oil mod? I tried searching, but got every thread in which mentioned oil and mod are mentioned, and couldn't find any that went together.

Tenebras,

Try looking in the tips and tricks section. I think that is where I saw them, or one. Click on the MOOT emblem in the upper left and look down the list when the page comes up. It's alphabetic list. I'll see if I can find some other links, or someone elst will. I know there are more. Did you look on some other sites?

There is a Dave Dodge link on the left hand side of the same page. He sells the parts for the oil mod. Check that out.

Hope that I am right about that and that it helps.

I will see if I can add some oil mod info there when I get home.  IIRC Jeff sent me some info on that.

I don't think that was the issue he was talking about.  That is a 3rd gen tech buliten.  I think he was talking abou the cam oiling problem on the 1st gen.
