The rear breaks on my 97 are squealing when I use them when stopping normally, but don't do it when I apply some more pressure. Everything looks good on the inside, drum looks good and there is plenty of life left on the pads, and I cleaned it up a little, but they are still making noise. I've heard of people taking some fine sandpaper and use that on the inside of the drum to take of some of the glaze that can build up. Anyone else heard of this or knows of another method that might help?
Have you by chance just washed the bike or ridden in the rain?? Most usually this is the cause, use the rear more progressively for a few times and see if it goes away.
I would not worry if you have plenty of brake liner left and things look good and most importantly it works.
I've only done spot washing and haven't been in any rain. It started doing it out of the blue a few months ago. Everything works great, it's just one of those anoiance things.
Herman,
My 2000 does the exact same thing and has for the last 2 years and 12000 miles. Have tried everything to fix it and it still squeaks. I just ride and apply more brake, which as you said makes it stop. Ride and don't worry about it.
I have the same problem on my '84. Mine does go away once the breaks are warmed up though. First couple of times you hit them especaly if it is cool out it squeels like a banshee and I originaly thought I had a problem but found out it is pretty common with the type of drum brakes we have.
I diddo Kerry except I have an '82.
