On my road trip with a few Harley and my bike is picking up some bad habits. I think the oil is coming from somewhere around the reserve fuel tank. I drips or flushes on top to the driveshaft housing the on top the left hand muffler and collector, the horn shaped chrome piece that covers the muffler clamps. Some of the oil finds runs down the swing arm to the final drive housing. This oil was found first thought the HD guys were messing with me, but came to a stop after 2 hours at 80 and the oil dumped on the exhaust and that is when I really found out about where it is coming from. Is there a crank case breather or something up in that area I see several tubes coming down, I'm sure on is for the battery.
The bike is a '85 V65 Magna
If I remember correctly there is a PCV hose that runs into the airbox. If that hose is deteriated or cracked it may allow crankcase blowby to drip down the engine block.
Thanks to all
I got it to a friends shop he cheap 6 pack of bud light, got it up on a lift found the capped tube may have had an oz in it. cleaned the bike with total cycle cleaner went for a 30 mile ride came back found the leak.
gear oil is coming out of the rubber flex coupling where the drive shaft has a u-joint I assume. So does that mean the seal where the final drive and the shaft are coming together three nuts faceing the front of the bike or what????
Thanks again to all whom help out before.
Dan
Here is the parts fiche with the seal and o-rings highlighted for the area you are talking about. If you need the fiche for the final drive let me know. HTH
found the input bearing on the pinion starting to go to crap, the seal was torn by the plastic bearing retainer. Final drive is fixed and reinstalled, just wish I had the time to replace the wheel bearings, but the spin ok but will do this on new tire installation. test ride later today.
Thanks for all the help.
