Title: It only takes a spark (plug) to get a Magna going . . .
Post by: dc112675 on July 28, 2006, 03:25:17 PM
Well, I think I may have finally solved my dilemna.  About a month ago I submitted a post regarding my 95 Magna's poor fuel effiency.  At that time, the highest mpg I was getting was about 30 (and that was straight freeway).  With only 8k miles on it and being driven somewhat efficiently (I was doing 70-75 on a flat freeway) I knew something wasn't right.  I added sea foam and that seemed to help a bit, but the real change came with the addition of new spark plugs (NGK's).

After the first tank, I got 38 mpg in town.  Not only is the mpg better, but it also runs smoother and much faster  .  Now I am flipping to reserve at 110+, whereas I previously couldn't have made it that far on the whole tank.  I can't wait to hit the freeway and get the 45+ mpg that I was hoping for.

On a side note, I also changed the air filter to a K&N performance filter.  Unfortunatly, I did that just a few miles after the plugs, so I couldn't tell if there was any difference.  It did "seem" more peppy, but that might have been my imagination.  The old filter looked brand new though, with hardly a speck on it . . .

Anyway, I just wanted to share the news.  Thanks for your help.  dc

I'm glad you got some improvement.  I'd be willing to bet however that 70 to 75 highway riding doesn't net your best mileage.  Bike and rider are not very aerodynamic.

I usually get around 45 in town and a little less than that on the freeway. (99 Magna)  My best mileage is obtained if I limit the jackrabbit starts and keep the top speed no higher than 60 (50 is even better).  My best mileage ever is about 50 1/2 mpg.
