I just got a 95 Magna with 1100 miles yes hundred. The auto garage that was selling it for a friend cleaned the carbs before I rode it because it would not idle. It seemed to run good so I got it , BUT I am getting 22mpg. Last tank was 27 on a Toy Run my son got 62 on same run with his 03 shadow ACE 750 ??? Any comments? Thanks
Something is not right. I don't calculate my mileage but I generally switch to reserve at 95-110 miles (depending on how hard I ride) and my reserve will go exactly 25 miles at a steady 70mph. Going by that I can figure 130 miles per tank (roughly) and the tank is 3.6 gallons so depending on how hard I twist the throttle I can expect between 36-40 mpg.
Like Jimmy said, something ain't right. You should get low 40's to low 50's at least, depending on how you ride. Might want to take it back to the shop, or find someone who knows what they are doing. Congrats on the Magna, you will love it once you get it fixed.
Yes. Congrats on the Magna as well. I got mine with just 1102 miles on it last September. Everyone's right. You should be getting a lot better mileage.
I might suspect the carbs simply because the bike has been sitting a lot. When you said they "cleaned" them did they actually take them apart thoroughly and clean them or did they just dump enough carb cleaner down them until the bike started to idle? You might want to find out.
I am by no means a carb expert but I do know that there's different parts of the carb for the idle and for fast running. You could have some gas varnish buildup throughout the carbs.
The other things to check would be your spark plugs and air filter. My Magna's filter was pretty dirty even though is only had 1100 miles on it.
Also unless the garage did it, you should change ALL the fluids: oil, brake, and coolant. Brake and coolant fluids should be completely flushed every 24 months as a general rule. Just do a few searches on this forum and you can find threads covering how to do that.
If you're in the MOOT membership area, you might want to see if there's a wrenching session going on. It would be a great way to learn about your bike and get some of the work done. I suggest if you pull you carbs that you at least do the Dave Dodge shim kit while cleaning them.
Good luck.
I have a 94 Magna and I get somewhere between 40 to 45 mpg in town going back and forth to work with lots of stop lights. So something ain't right. You might try a can of sea foam just for starters to see if it helps I have been using it in mine and it has helped it and I was allready getting pretty good mpg. You can get sea foam at Oreillys auto.
The garage said he pulled the carbs and found 3 of the low speed jets clogged I don't know if he did or not. Last night I pulled the plugs all are in same condition Black soot not wet or carboned or burned. Also do not know if 1st owner might have rejetted it, I am 3rd, 2nd never got a license. Back tire was only 30psi I raised it to 36 last Sunday am going to try 40. As I am over 200# and have saddle bags as far as wrench session I live in CT would be quite a commute. Thanks again for your comments
You want your plugs to look nice and golden brown. Slow speed jets clog pretty easily on the Magna's, if you can start it without choke and get it to idle and accept throttle input in a minute or two then your slow speeds jets are more than likely clean.
I have seen the left rear cylinder (#1) slow speed jet clogged and not run to the point that the 3 other mufflers were hot and the top left muffler was cold to the touch.
Air filters are pretty important on the Magna, give that a check.
