Title: Chain too short
Post by: chieninhouston on August 27, 2006, 06:51:33 PM
When I was lubing my chain this morning. Remembering I was told in the last wrench session that my chain is really short. So I did a head count. Well, it is 115 links. It also felt a little too loose. Thought about doing some adjustment. Well, it seemed to me it is was way  over the adjustable range. Really not comfortable riding with this chain. So took the Super to ride. Got rained on. It was not my day I guess.  :(

I think I really need some help from gurus to replace the chain. When are we going to have another wrench session in Costal Region. Helps needed. Just pick any day, I'll bring the rain along.   thanks.

If it is 115 links then somebody took some links out to further the lifespan.  Yup, time to yank that puppy!!!  Would be a good idea to replace the sprockets too

Allen will probably reply tomorrow when he gets off the boat, however I believe he has the chain rivet tool for when you pick up a new chain.
Check the sprockets out to see if they are in need of being replaced, as a worn set of sprockets will wear out a new chain quickly.

James, I remember us talking about your chain but I don't remember what we determined on your sprockets.  Someone needed a chain but their sprockets looked brand new. I think that was Felicia though.

I'm pretty sure Allen has the chain breaker tool. I haven't done a motorcycle chain but I have done a few bicycle chains that use a smaller version of the same type of tool. I'll be glad to help/observe but I  it would be nice to have someone there who has done it. I think Marc has.

We do need to have a wrenching/riding session soon... with a little more riding. :)  I'm still waiting on a part to get shipped to my house and then I should be back up and running with a vengance. I'm going through withdrawal.

I believe at the time gurus were agreed that sprokets were ok. Only chain is needed. I'll pay closer attention to them when I get a chance.

I am kind of nervous about changing the chain and sprokets. Because that will invlove removal of the rear tire. Everthing seems to be big and heavy. I am not sure I can do it right by myself.

Sorry a little late but Marc is having a little wrench session and if any of you want to stop by the house feel free to grab the chain tool and have fun if not then I will be off the boat on the 12th of september so if you would like to wait then anyone that has chain issues we can take care of them then.... or that week that I have off

I have done that, felt the same way you did before doing it but afterwards discovered it was not that much of a deal. If you have an alternate ride, then if you run into problems just get on the forum or give me a call and could probably walk you through the problem. It is a nice educational experience.
