Title: Leather Repair
Post by: 2fs2ns on October 02, 2006, 11:33:11 AM
Do those leather repair kits do any good?  I've got about an inch and a half tear along the seam on the back of the seat.  Not sure if those do-it-yourself kits are any good, or I should pay a vist to an upholsterer (sp?)?

Well really it's vinyl. So I'd make sure I had a vinyl repair kit.  But I don't know how well they work.

However, is the seat comfortable for you? Because you could use this as an excuse to get another seat or get yours recovered with some different padding.  :)

A local upholstery shop next to me has done a few motorcycles and when he changes the padding he recommends that you ride it a few miles without the cover and then come back and tell him what you think. That way he can change it easily. If you like it, then he just puts the cover on. May not be a bad approach.

Ahh, vinyl, I knew that ;)

Seat is comfortable so far, but I never ride more than 45mins or so at a time, most of the time it's less than 30mins.  Besides, I don't have the coin for a new seat right now.

I guess I have an iron butt,  cause I rode my '99 all the way from Lafayette Louisiana to Austin Texas  for the R.O.T rally this year. The only problem I had was my back. If I had a drivers backrest I'd have been fine.

I have a friend in the upholstery business, if it's at the seam he can usually put a small piece on the inside of the cover and restitch it. the cover is stapled on and is easy to remove I usually take the cover off and take it to him to save money. You might check with a local shop, may not be to bad. As for the vinyl repair kits, I wouldn't waste my money. Cigarette burns are about all they're good for. ( just my opinion) Good luck

Welcome to the forum Bayou_wolf.  I find that I ride many many more miles than some folks.  And then there others who approach 100k miles per year and make me feel like an amateur.  A backrest is definately a plus though.

Vinyl repair?  hmmmm, can't help with that, sorry!

Is it the seam that is split or the vinyl itself?  I had a seam pop on mine and just restitched it.

I'm from Gueydan, La. but live in Lafayette for now. I work 7/7 in the Gulf so the seven days i'm home they can't get me off Black Beauty. My wife loves to ride pillion when she can. My stock seat has split to and am looking into different options.

Have plans to go to Kentucky, Tennesse and maybe Pennsylvania this year. Hopefully!
Title: vinyl repair kit
Post by: Magnum Magna on October 02, 2006, 09:39:47 PM
I used a vinyl repair kit last month. The tear was about ¼ of an inch in the middle of the narrow strip in the fake stitch work.  My fellow workers and I thinks it looks OK.

But I believe the instruction said if the tear is more than ½ an inch you will need to put a cloth patch under the vinyl for a proper repair. So you would have to take the staples out and repair it while removed from the seat.  My wife is going to replace that strip with a new vinyl and embroider my initials on the sides of my seat.

Good luck

Man Charles, to hear you talk folks would think I need a Boss Hoss to carry my girth, when I'm actually quite svelte!!! 8)  8)  :D   Of course a few more years of the ol' Ride-To-Eat might change that!!!

I was only talking about your reasons for riding. You know I would never say anything about your size,  again :D
