Title: 1983 VF 750C Ignitors
Post by: kbob on October 03, 2006, 04:39:21 PM
Can any list members tell me what OEM Ignitor (spark box)
part numbers are specific to a 1983 VF750C. I cannot get a Honda dealer to cross reference the Honda part number to the the OEM part number.

Thank you Jeff!
I am looking for the ND and Hitachi part numbers. I have several spark boxes and believe that non of them are for my 1983 VF750C.

Forgot to mention that the spark box with the red plug has the rev limiter in it. I think it is item #2 in the drawing, maybe someone will chime in and verify that.

From a search on e-bay, it looks like Valley Motor Salvage in Orem Utah lists Hitachi T1D12-04 MBO (black label) as OEM 30400-MBO-004 for 1982-83 VF750C & VF750S, but your post looks like these are for 1982 year only. I think that I need OEM 30400-MBO-005 and would assume they are Hitachi T1D12-05 MBO. Some say there is no difference in 1982-83 VF 750C/S and VF 1100C Ignitors but I cannot confirm. I will look tonight and see what the ND and Hitachi part numbers are on the four ignitors that I have.

Look at the third column and the ones with a "3" in them are the ones you need for your bike. I have heard you can use some of the other boxes but as to which ones I don't know. Awhile back I swapped one of the V65 boxes to the V45 and it worked.

Looked at our Magnas and the box with the rev limiter is part #1(on the right hand side). The V45 has ND boxes (MB1 code) and has AKBZ23 (131100-3950, rev limiter) and AKBZ22 (131100-3940). The V65 has Hitachis (MB4 code), part numbers on them are TID 12-13A(rev limiter) and TID 12-13.

This ain't much but I hope it helps some.

Jeff,
Does the Nippondenso 131100-3950 have a red plug and larger physical size than the 131100-3940?
Here is what I have and the way they are labeled:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
   ND    AKBZ23
         131100-3950
    12V             MB1       Blue label, red plug, 2 1/4" x 3 1/4"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ND  NIPPONDENSO
           131100-3490 (?) could be 3940, I was in a hurry with dislexia
     12V             MB1      Red label, white plug, 2" x 2 1/4"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------     ND   NIPPONDENSO
            13110-3260
       12V            MB1      Black label, white plug, 2" x 2 1/4"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
       IC  IGNITOR
        T1D12-13
       MB4           210
HITICHI  LTD            Blue label, white plug, 2" x 2 1/4"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have tryed all the combinations of spark boxes in my 1983 VF750C, but I suspect I have other issues with this bike. The bike seemed to respond differently with the mix and match spark boxes, but it's hard to tell. I had a wireing melt down due to trying to keep a bad battery charged. I have stripped all suspect wires back to good copper, replaced terminals, deleted the connector from the alternator to regulator/rectifer (soldered each of the yellow wires). I want to be sure I have the corret spark boxes before chasing other electrical problems. It has a misfire in 1/3 cylinders as noted with an induction timing light while listining to the misfire. Number 1 plug shows rich and #3 slightly rich. This bike responds differently on some days but I cannot find out why. On ocassion it runs good, other times like crap. It never has run like it should. I had another 83 VF 750C that ran circles around this bike. Unfortunately, my X got it in the divorce.
Next is a valve adjustment and carb removal/cleaning/modification.

***Try swapping your coils out and see if the misfire moves to the 2/4 cyl.'s. If it does then you know you have a bad coil. A coil from a V65 should fit your '83, our '84 V45 has a coil out of my V65. I've done two valve adjustments so if you need some help with that let me know. I can help you clean the carbs but if there is any problems with them you can ask Greg C. for some help. Sorry to hear about your other bike, that's a bummer.

Bob, have you had a chance to work on your bike yet?

Jeff,
I have not had time to work on it yet. I have coils from a parts bike (1983 VF1100C) that I tryed before. The bike did not seem to improve, but it is so unpredictable that it is hard to tell. Sometimes runs better than other  times. I did not have an induction timing light when I swapped coils last time. The timing light makes it much easier to detect where the misfire is coming from. I will use it tonignt and move the coils and spark plug wires around. I am still concerned that I do not have the correct ignitors, however I don't  think they are causing the misfire. The bike seems to accrelerate better after 3,000 RPM up to red line through 5th gear, but hesitates from 1,000 to 2,00 RPM. It starts to bog down toward top speed in 6th gear (about 95 to 100 mph). The other bike (ex-wifes) would reach top speed around 125 mph, but it would keep on pulling as if it wanted more. Needless to say, I did not ride it that fast very often and sometimes ran out of road.
Thanks for the offer on the valve/carb work. I have recently moved to an apartment with a small garage and have not sorted things out yet. The ex took all my tools so I am still recovering.
More later ...
