Hi all, I'm planning to get my aluminum fork tubes powder coated this winter, and wonder if it's much of a job to take them apart, and also putting them back together. Will I need new seals or bushings?
I have the factory shop manual and the general Honda service book too.
Thanks!
Greg
I would put in new seals and if there was any wear on the bushing or bushing material floating in the fluid, then I would replace them as well.
When you drain the fluid have a good light and you will see the golden flakes shimmer if there is any.
If you pull them all the way apart you most likely have to replace the bush seals and bushings anyways so it's best to do a total rebuild!!!
I'm wondering how difficult it is to get these apart, and put back together.
New parts may be required, I understand.
I have lots of sched 40 pvc pipe (abs?) in small diameter which I can use to punch out (if required) seals etc.
Would these be required for install?
Has anyone here done this job before?
Thanks.
Greg
Well I have done it and it is not that bad this the link to our tips section
http://www.magnaownersoftexas.org/tips.htm#A1.18 look for Seal replacement and that will give you an idea how to do it. I will say this much that they come apart easy and are a pain to get back in  .
But if I can do it you can do it. I replaced everything when I went in there because I figured it was a once in a few years thing and because I had a seal leaking and some metal flakes in mine so I figured it was time. I think with both new bushings and the seals and bottom copper washer it totaled about 90.00 thats if you get them on line if you go to the dealer oops I mean stealer you will pay 130.00 or so if you have anymore ??? give me a shout I had mine chromed when I took mine off they looked great but I think they are starting to bubble  so I might have to do mine again and maybe this time I will powder coat mine too...
thanks for the link; it's clear now.
what problems did you have putting them back together?
did you need a "special tool"?
Greg
Well just lining up that bushing and thats the reason for the pvc to tap it in and for the seal. You will see what I am talking about when you get to that part I had the tool I borrowed from a friend in the hood. It is 60. or so bucks makes the job easier but not needed. But when you get to that point and need help just holler and I will help anyway I can....
One thing I would say is make sure to take the drain bolt out on the bottom of the fork while the spring cap and springs are in. They won't turn that way sometimes they are tight once you have them out then you can take the caps off....
