OK...Everyone in the forums has been so informative and helpful. Now I need help again. Rode to work this morning without a care. On the ride home however, I noticed a hollow rattle seemingly coming from the case or drive end while in OD. Shifting to 5th the noise was more of a low whine. In 2nd gear, it definitely sounded like grinding. There was no noise with the clutch disengaged. There is no noticeable change in performance. Any thoughts or similar experiences? I'm sorry to keep asking the group, but I can sure use the help and advice.
You say there was no noise with the clutch disengaged. Was that sitting at a light or did you pull the clutch in while coasting at speed? This may help us eliminate the drive shaft and gear if it doesn't make noise at speed with clutch disengaged.
Anthony
Thanks for the reply and question Anthony. I admit that I only checked with the clutch disengaged while stopped. I checked again after I got home with the bike in nuetral and the clutch lever out without the noise. I didn't think to check while coasting with the clutch disengaged. I can try that later.
I'm wondering if a bearing or universal joint has gone bad...
At Anthony's suggestion, I tried a couple of things out. There is no noise when the bike is running whether in nuetral with the clutch in or out or in gear with the clutch in. I only have the noise, an slight vibration, when the bike is rolling and, as it turns out, when coasting again whether in nuetral with the clutch in or out or in gear with the clutch in. Any thoughts or diagnosis? Thanks to everyone who can help me out with this.
Oh....yeah...I also ran it while up on a stand. Again, the noise and vibration is only present when the rear wheel is turning. As soon as I apply the brake, the noise stops.
Same thing happened to mine last year-didn't know what was going on!
Put new chain & sprockets on last winter & voila! The vibes & noise are gone.
I hope this is all the problem is; its an easy fix.
Greg
sorry, no chain on that bike! disregard my last post, please.
Thanks.
Greg
Do the symptoms suggest a problem with the driveshaft, universal joint or bearings or something with the cross shaft and bearings?
Thanks
Check the dampner can. And check the U joint. This (http://www.v4hondabbs.com/index.php?showtopic=1884&hl=u+joint) will help, lots of pics.
Sounds a lot like your U-joint.

Is the final drive oil level correct?
QuoteIs the final drive oil level correct?
Thanks for asking, Jeff. I did check the oil level in the Final Drive and it was about as close to being to the bottom edge of the fill hole as it could be without actually being to the bottom edge of the fill hole.
I'm hoping it is the drive shaft or universal joint and not *gasp* something with the transmission
