Title: Magna Woes
Post by: dc112675 on December 05, 2006, 03:49:51 PM
Got a 95 Magna with 7,000 miles about 8 months ago and love it. Usually runs great but occasionally it won't accelerate well, sputters, and even backfires.  Usually that lasts a mile or so and only does it once or twice a tank.  However, a few weeks ago it was really acting up, and then one day it wouldn't start.  It turns over but won't fire.  I also can smell gas.

Tried to check the fuel line and it works, but in the process broke a "T" coupler where three lines intersect.  The part came in the mail and I'm going to put it on, but what do I do next?

It has Cobra pipes, and the guy I bought it from had just paid $500 to get it tuned, but I don't know if he had it re-jetted.  When I got it, I put in new plugs, tires, oil & filter, and a K&N air filter.  However, I did not add shims as some have suggested to others on this forum.

I have a manual and want to do my own work, but I feel like I am way over my head.  I usually stick with minor maintenance on my other vehicles (oil, filters, brakes, etc) so this is new to me.  I have the service manual but don't really know where to start.

I live in west TX so there aren't many (if any) shops in my small town, but if I take it to my dad in Dallas area he would get it to a shop there.

So . . . is there a good one in DFW you recommend?  Do they check jets and add shims, in addition to getting it running again?  Or do I need to locate the elbow grease and do it myself.  I'd love to come to a wrenching session but I really don't want to push it there.  Sorry for all the questions . . . thanks, doug

I would change the broken "T" out and rediagnose from there.
A couple questions for you, has the bike sat for any length of time before the symptoms started?  Even if it were 2 weeks.
I am in the DFW are and will offer up my services to help you get it figured/fixed.

I was driving it about 4-5 days a week, but living in a small town means that I might go 1-2 miles a day, and a tank can last up 4 weeks or more!  But as I mentioned, it did act up the day before.  Being that it is 12 years old with only 8,000 miles, I am guessing it could have gunked up carbs.  But then again I knowing little to nothing about mechanics.

I am coming to DFW this weekend, but it my old man can deliver it any time after that.  Can you give me some contact information?  Thanks, dc
