Allen, thanks I think I've got it.  The slow jet feeds the pilot screw, then up into the carb throat just after the throttle plate (Helix carb is the same as the Magna in this respect).

Wanted to say thanks for all the help gents.

I took the carb apart again on Sunday, for the third time, only this time was very anal about cleaning and poking all the carb, needle, and jet orfices, prior to soaking overnight.  Next day I fired up the actual air compressor, instead of the can of compressed air, and blew out the carb body and jets.  Put it all back together, and voila!  It's running as well as ever again.

Still a bit strange to me that initially there was no engine catch at all when turned over, then after replacing the auto-choke, it would catch after a while, but wouldn't run worth a crap.  Must have had some gummed up idle circuit stuff along with the auto-choke.

Oh well, it's fixed.  Again, thanks for the help and sanity checks along the way.

While I have no official input on this topic, Lurkin, I rather enjoyed your long lengthy post.  TheBullet points made it that much easier to read.   How much does the stealership want to diagnose the problem?   Sometimes it's cheaper to have then do the diagnosis than to throw parts at it.  Just an Idea.  good luck!
