Mine is comming on during in town driving.  At this point I'm not that worried about it.  It is there for a reason though, so I will mention it and see what yall think I need to check into.  Coolant is good, oil is good, and the fan works.  Could it be possible the sensor is going bad?  I kinda dout that and I understand sitting in stop and go trafic aint the best for it.  I dont plan to pull over and panic every time the little red light comes on, but like I said, it is there for a reason.  I dont think it is a common problem with these bikes so something is up, but what?

How about a Thermostat going bad  ie not opening
I think that's what under the fake air cleaner on one side.
Just a guess.
OK now I wonder, where is the temp pickup for that light and where is the heat switch for the fan?

Over 80,000 miles on 3rd Gen Magna in Texas and I have never seen the light come on. I would definitely check  things out, starting with the fluid level,  then the thermostat. It would probably be an inexpensive replacement. How many miles?

Less than 20K.  I would guess it has sat more than ridden.
Hows this:
After thinkin and talkin to the good folks at scooter petes, I have a feeling that the radatior  (bad spelling, sorry) cap is bad.  I rode my bike 45 min or so to my parents house, me and my dad looked over it, it looked good.  I rode it back home that night, next morning I saw white spots on the right side of the bike.  That puzzled me.  I took it out again and when I got back home I noticed the GREEN spots.  Bike was too hot to do much with, so I let it cool down.  I took the cap off, put some water in, got the cap back on.  Ran the bike a bit to warm it up, the fan would kick on and off, reved the bike to 6k or so, watched the radaitor for signs of the green stuff.  Only when I looked away did it spit some out, so I reved it again, there goes the little red light.  Shut the bike off let the fan run.
It looks to me the cap is the problem.  It might have been worn out enough to let in air, but no fluid out at that point, and when we took off the cap it couldn't make a good enough seal when we put it back on.

Am I on the wrong path or does my thinkin actually seem right on this?

Yes I will flush the system once I get the problem figured out, but if I am leaking I would rather leak the old stuff and not the good new stuff.

Nope you are on the right path there have been a few radiator caps go on the 3rd gens have seen a few. at least it is somewhat cheap fix !!!!

Try bending the tabs a little in order to tighten up the seal.  That fixed mine after it started to leak because of me getting rough with it while installing a chrome radiator cap cover.
