I've got a 1986 V45 that I let sit to long and the carbs got gummed up.  I took it to the shop and they said the 4 carbs need to be rebuilt and two sliders were torn and had to be replaced.  They want $730.00 to do the job.  Is this reasonable?

Slydynbye

Ouch! I would probably buy a good carb set off Ebay before I paid someone that much.
There is a guy who does rebulids on for older Magna carbs on the iNet, I'll look for that link.

No, it's not reasonable if you do it yourself!  :-P

You can soak them in carb/solvent cleaner and locate some carbs/sliders used.

Are you skeptical doing the work yourself? It will probably run with the old sliders until you locate another set, than again someone here might have a couple to sell you and/or carbs themself.

I don't know how many hours it calls for but if the sliders have the diaphragm attached (I think yours do) those can get pricey.

What part of the country are you in??  Several in MOOT around Texas have the knowledge to help with this....Just being gummed up is not a big deal, that can be tackled quite easily..  I am unsure unless they took them apart how they know the slides need to be replaced??

I probably wouldn't be much help. But I would watch the rebuild. Maybe I can learn something.

Tell ya what, after the holidays I will hold a wrench session and we can go through them if you want???

Those carbs are easy to clean but be forewarned they can be a pain to remove and replace. They have to be turned and twisted just right to get them out. I just sold a set of carbs to another Mootster so I don't have any sliders for ya...sorry but you should be able to find some on ebay or other source.

Wrong animal Mack, he has an 86 model. Back to the drawing board.

Ditto on the hard to pull / install the carbs on an '86.
The key is to take everything off the bike that them manuals tell you to; tank, radiator, hoses, filter housing....  I found no shortcuts to getting it off and some scary points where I had to use a pry bar to get it knocked loose.   Going back on, the trick is to get the hard rubber donuts which seal the connection to the heads sitting at just the right angle so you can put the carbs back on the bike.

I didn't find the carbs on my 83 all that difficult to remove. I didn't even take the radiator off. Now putting them back on took a little extra work. :-D

Ok, I will try this again. Hopefully I won't make a fool out of myself this time.

I found this on ebay. It's a basic carb kit. The guy is in Canton. He has other early Magna items. And he even offers to rebuild you carb for you. The cost looked reasonable. Is this guy a MOOTster? If he isn't maybe he should be. LOL
