The '82 V45 is running funny. When I wind it out, somewhere between about 4 grand and up to maybe 7000 rpms it runs like a dog dragging it's master behind.

Can't decide if it a new thing since I have only had it a short time. Trying to think if I was riding it as hard and therefore never got into that rpm range or if this just cropped up.

I am going to change the spark plugs since it a little past time for new ones. Maybe that will help.

Any thoughts/hints will be welcome.

Thanks.

engine running funny reminds of the the two cannibals who were eating a clown when one turned to the other and said, "does this taste funny to you?" sorry

Since it sounds like it happened suddenly I would check for spark starting with the coils.

I agree that if it runs good up to that point then ignition related problems would be a first consideration.  Once ingition issues are cured or ruled out then I would proceed to the fuel delivery.  Pull a couple of plugs and read them, they should look golden brown, not chaulky white (too lean), and not dark brown/black and wet (too rich).

Thanks guys. My computer was down for a time and I only got it running this evening.

I put in new plugs and the battery died last week and that is new. I got the Clymer manual and plan on giving it the once over this winter, at least what I think I can handle.

The plugs looked like it was running rich. I haven't pulled any to see if it is still happening but the performance is tremendous now. I don't ride particularly fast, but I do like to get up to speed and then some in an awful hurry. I am thinking that I had been doing a lot of moderate riding and puttsing and they just carboned up. I always try to wind it out a few times after riding in town for a time just to clean things up.

I'll have to put her up soon and I am not looking forward to that. Paraphrasing Greg from another post, it is a good time for mods and maintanace and it doesn't interrupt the riding. The thought really helps, but it still really hurts.
