87 VF 700

Last month I bought my 87 Super Magna. Been about 20 years since I owned a bike (Virago in the day). I immediatly did my research before I bought it and knew this was the one. I am looking for a service manual/owners manual. I am in Katy, TX. Thought I would try here first before looking at Honda dealer. I think it's Wild West Honda on the Katy Frwy. Any help would be great. Also I own a 93 Mustang LX (not stock) and I pride myself on the upkeep of my Stang and now the Magna. So are there any oil or gas addatives the Magnas like or dislike? I use Royal Purple, Lucas gas treatment in my Stang. I do not know alot about the motorcycle engines and dont want to assume they are the same as a V8. Thank you. This is my first post and look forward to meeting members of MOOT family.

The oils are different because of the motorcycles wet clutch.  Many use the purple they will tell you which one to use.  Some where is a PDF of manuals for the 3rd gen and probably for the 87 / 700 also.

Seafoam is an additive some likes to clean the carbs.  A friend at work did wonders for his carb problems.

Welcome Randy to the site.  Great purchase on the Super magna.  I run techron additive from chevron in my 2001 magna about every 3 tank fulls. As far as engine oil some others might jump in and give their opinions, but i use mobil 1 in my bike.  Good luck and keep the v-4 engine on the road.... Lance

On oil you need to make sure it does NOT have any friction modifiers in it.  I PREFER motorcycle specific synthetics, they are designed for wet clutches and being synthetic you get twice the mileage between changes.  I use Mobil 1 4t (used to be named MX4T).

Seafoam, works the best for fuel additive that I have found.

Hey Randy...Welcome to the group.  I am particularly fond of the Super Magna and have an 88 Super "in the family" belonging to my son-in-law that I was able to save from a 15 year hybernation.  The Clymer manual covers all of the Magnas from 82 - 88, so it would be a good addition to your library.  Do not buy it at dealer price.  Instead, buy it off ebay OR, go to the links section of this website to download an electronic version.  If you have difficulty, I'm happy to send you a copy on CD.

I agree with, Greg about synthetics.  I cannot find Mobil 1 4t in the one horse town in which I live.  Instead, I am running Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle oil with very good results.  Seafoam and daily riding keep my carburetors nice and clean...!!!

Hey Randy,  Congrats on the 87.  That's what I was looking for when I ended up with my 96.  I live in Katy also.  If you need any help or want to go for a ride just send me a message.  I'm around about 75% of the time and do alot of early morning riding during the summer.

Thanks for all the invite replies!!! I will check into posting a pic in my profile. I found the Clymer book, paid like $35 at Honda shop, but not much more than EBay considering tax and shipping cost, maybe $5 more, but just had to have it. I have used Seafoam in my cars, do I just follow the recommended amount per gallon of gas mixture? I would use the whole bottle in my car, but I'm sure I don't want to dump the bottle in a 3+ gallon tank.

Yes, Randy...follow the recommended ratio shown on the can.  I read it every time so haven't committed it to memory, but I believe it is 1 oz. per gallon...
