Modifying stock seat

Im thinking of removing the stock seat on my magna that the seams on the right side have come off on and there is a hole. I was thinking of removing the cover and trimming donw the padding to get my but lower and adding more of a swoop to the back as kind of a mini back rest spot, then taking it to get re. apulstered. Has anyone thought of doing this yet as a way to modify your seat withought spending $400
on a corbin or mustang seat? im guessing it would cost $50 max to do this. Any thoughts on this process?

Some have done this and used a gel pack in the seat.

I think i will do this mod sometime after i get back from an 11 day vacation i go on tomorrow. I want to make it less bulky and pudgy looking and get my but as low as i can. I just dont want to spend 400 on a corbin gunfighter right mow.

Well your seat is much larger than the stock solo seat on the newer magnas. I think im actualy just going to take some thin bendable steel sheet and mold a new pan to fit it and have padding and leather or vinyl ur arround that. Then attaching all the mounting stuff to that to secure it to the bike. I can shape it more how i want that way.

You can't make a pan any lower than the stock pan, you can cut the foam down as low as you can stand to sit on, you can even remove the pillion and stretch the back of the front pan to look like a gunfighter seat. Cutting the seat down to fit you is easy as long as you go slow and remove small amounts at a time. Getting the seat recovered is the only real expense. The shop I use to do all my upholstery work gets anywhere from $60.00 basic, up to what ever you can dream up. Not everyone likes my style or color choices , but the upholstery work is quality.

These are some of the seats I've redone, the first is the Corbin seat on Guy Wheatley's Magna we cut the passenger seat down and widened it for his wife.
The second is my current two up road seat, the next is it in progress.

next is my 87 it was the first of the Magnas to get lowered (just a little)

The last is my wifes first bike,250 Virago , also lowered in the back and recovered. I don't have a current pic of Brenda's Shadow seat but I'll post one later if there is any interest.












If your wondering why all my seats are grey ostrich,(no not a bargan on Ostrich) it's because it's a lot cooler to sit on after it been in the sun all day..

How did you widen it Charles, start with a new piece of foam, widen the pan, glue foam to the edges??

Allen at Mean City Cycles in North Carolina (http://www.meancitycycles.com) does custom seat modifications.  I had him do a memory foam modification to my wife's VTX 1300C seat.  He scooped it out to make it about 1" lower for her, and moved her about 1" forward.  All this for $90 plus shipping.  She can ride all day long now.  He also did a similar mod to my bosses wife's Fat Boy seat.  I'm sure he could do this to the Magna seat.
