Robert you can always put your resonators back in later.

The debate rages on!
What I did: carefully drilled out the rivits and removed the end plate with attached baffle.
Then I drilled about 20-24 1/4" holes in each baffle, and reinstalled the modified unit.
To keep it in place, and ease future removal, I tapped the ex rivet holes and installed hex head cap screws (black).
Now, you can at least hear the bike running with a helmet on your head.
The mod is easily reversable (just weld a metal sheet over the resonator (baffle)) if you want to go back to quiet.
I can just hear the exhaust as I ramp up through the gears, until I hit about 70MPH, then the wind noise takes over.
It sounds like a V4, not a V twink, and is also nice on deceleration.
Cheers!

When you drill the endplates or the resonators do you have to install new jets as you would if you did the 'standard' muffler mod? I find it hard to believe that the magna could even sound remotely close to a VW.  wrong accent

Here is an answer I gave to someone who PMed me the other day.

Yep you can drill with the pipes on the bike and you don't have to shim or jet but that's something I would eventually do anyway. I rode my bike over 40K miles with V&H pipes, stock filter and stock carb setup. So carb work is up to what you want to do.

But the answer is drill it and go, you will like it. Nothing else needs to be done.

I did keep my plugs if someone wants to see photos of those.

Hey Terry,

Would it be possible to drill out two of the rivets, then enlarge those holes to 7/16"?  I just like things to look symmetrical and the holes between the rivets look out of place.

By the way, I also have an old VW Bug with a mildly modified engine with headers and dual glass packs.  There's no way I could make my Magna sound like that unless I removed the mufflers and ran straight pipes

No reason that you couldn't do that BA. Once you drill it, they're really not noticeable. I know what a VW sounds like and this isn't it.  :-P This sounds Good!

That's such a pretty photo I hate to mess it up.  :-P

Jim, I drilled mine in the location as the sound is good there. It shouldn't, but moved sideways may affect the tone due to the baffle location down in the pipe. Considering this I would shoot for 1 & 4 or  2 & 5. I will be painting my end plates to clean them up, not because of drilling, they need it.

I only drilled one hole in each pipe as shown in second video.  It sounds quite abit louder than before.
I started with a 4mm and ended with a 13mm.  Just wanted to keep it metric. hehe

Terry, when you say rivets 1 and 4 or 2 and 5  what is this in reference too on the rivets.  How are you numbering these?? :-?   Excuse my ignorance, you guys have lost me... :?

Jim, Great Job!!!

I have a 3/8" hole on the inside (3 or 9 o'clock) of each endplate.. Not sure the metric equivelent.. It looks about the same..
I think the videos do give a pretty good representation in the change in sound..
There is some increase in exhaust volume, but in no way would I say they are "loud". Remember the videos were done inside a garage.. If your worried about waking up the neighbors, don't worry and in the words of John McCain "Drill baby Drill!!!"

Is there any plans to go to two holes?? I have contemplated it.. I wonder what the difference is in sound level / pitch --- More like a VW??   It may actually be quieter as the exhaust has more area to excape out...

Lance, Jim and I are psychic!

Lance, if you look on this Page 3 at one of Jim's post he added a photo you can "click to enlarge", there you will see he numbered the rivets.
