Drilled Pipes

It has been 7 years that the drilled stock pipes were on this bike. Ended up I did not remember how they sound. Robert was over and listened to the pipes, than I listened to his muffler mod. We seem to both come to the conclusion the drilled pipes had a nicer exhaust note, some character.

The good thing about this is.....

No drilling out rivets

No difficulty in removing the resonators or mangling them up

No re-riveting

No painting end-caps

Because of this I drilled a set I forgot I had in the attic for the other Magna.

What you end up with is 2 opposing drilled 7/16" holes (1/2" is probably fine but the first were done with 7/16's so I kept them the same).

I stepped up my drilling from 1/8" 3-4 steps and finished with 7/16". Keep some oil close by to dip your drill bit into for lubrication and cooling.  When you drill metal run low RPMs, high RPM's will dull your bit in no time. If your bits not cutting, it's history, unless you can resharpen.

The lower one has new rivets as I had the end off exploring.

Yes I liked the sound it had a nice louder rumble then removing the resonators.  Before doing any mod if you have the opportunity you should listen to the different mods.

Terry;
This looks very similar to mine, except presently I have one hole and it is on the inside (toward the tire). The one thing I did do with mine is once I got through the metal I slowly straightend the bit to be in line with the exhaust... I know it's a little thing but hey I figure I wan the air to come as straight out as possible and it looks a little more natural with the flow of things.. I bet you have just about nothing coming out the original pipe with these two holes...
I too like the sound a little better.. a little less tinny (sp?), I like to think it's a little more like a Porsche.. Oh, come on.. It's my little world, let me live in it!!!!

Jester

can someone who has done this take a video *with sound* and post it to youtube or the like?  I would like to hear the difference.   Thanks!

TLRam1

If I had a video camera I would be happy to obliged.

Put in your signature where your located Jester, maybe someone close could arrange a hearing.  :-P I would be glad to do it over the phone. What do you think?

Robert, do you have a video camera?

Good luck with the Phone, I tried listening to one over the phone and it sounded more like a garbage disposable. :?

Hey, has anyone drilled holes after they have removed the resonators??   How does it sound?  Still tinny??

Hoot, these are scientifically Tuned to be correct with the hole-angle for proper amount of flow and back pressure on the return stroke from the exhaust side so on the intake stroke the venturis flow the proper air and vacuum for a correct air fuel mixture from the Slow, Needle and Main Jets. Chad flew down from Michigan to assist in this study. In Chad's self produced carburetor software the figures coincided with the numbers spit out by his program.   ;-) ;-) ;-)

I am working on this as my mid-range is not what it could be. Maybe Allen could come up here and we can go to town working this stuff out. I have 2 bikes we can work with and see if we can tune this stuff out. I am also checking my gas mileage as I'm going thru the process.

Ahhhh, that explains it.. Well almost, because I did the exact same factoring, but it looks like you did not take into account that there are 4 cylinders and that there is a crossover between the two on each side, so the Venturi factor is changed slightly all along the baffle from the original calculations and by slightly changing the exit angle it modifies the volicity of the exhaust (Increasing Horsepower) and Increases the cooling of the metal of the mufflers causing them to last longer and thereby not have a baffle come loose and cause a whirling sound.. The cooling also has another side benefit of making the Muffler bearing last longer and run smoother..

But this would be an easy factor to overlook...

Good job Terry and Chad...!

>>>Make'em weighters<<<

I'm not witty often but I can keep up with this stuff.

As Lawrence suggested we removed the bearings which gave us lighter weight, less restriction therefore the matrix we used had us close off the cross-over with a automatic butterfly only opening at the appropriate time, really the butterfly is a camouflage (as we explain the operation of the butterflies to the judges) for nitrous we hookup up to eliminate midrange issues and carries over into top-end performance. Chad had a great idea to use the frame as the nitrous bottle to disguise what we're running. We will be installing squish heads Chad is having made in Michigan than he will ship down here. Crank will be lightened also along with the stator being removed for lighter weight. All this factored into our analysis. Of course we can't divulge all our secrets....  :D 8-)
