Chain Guard Mod

Has anyone thought of adding a mod to the back of the chain guard that would wrap around the rear sprocket to help reduce sling-off on your rear rim and tire?

Ideas?

I've been thinking the exact thing.  I've got a place that is going to custom fabricate a chain guard for me in January or February (when I will have time to screw around with it).  I am going to have them wrap it around the rear sprocket so that it keeps oil from hitting the rear wheel (as much as possible).  I have a pro-oiler on my bike, and while it is great at keeping the chain lubed, it really throws off a lot of crap onto the rear wheel.  I'll try to remember to post pictures after I get it done.

Great, post photos when you have them. What is the guard being fab'ed  out of?

Not sure.  I'll let the place that is doing it decide (I plan to paint it to match the bike, so it doesn't much matter to me what it is made of) but I assume they will go with aluminum.

I have the Pro Oiler and yeah it does make a mess!! A chain guard to cover most of it would help for sure and almost 20000 miles on the chain and sprockets so far and no noticeable wear on sprockets and chain has not stretched much either!!!!!

The chain guard on my ancient Harley completely covered the chain & rear sprocket.  It was thin  sheet metal, in  two pieces, with a gasket between.  There was a hole in the bottom for the oil to leak out (which it did -- big time), the oil was scavenged from the crankcase -- just enough to keep the chain well oiled, and make an oil spot every time you parked it.  Made for good chain life, though.

I put the engine guards ("roll bars" or "crash bars" in the parlance of the day) on after a minor slide on a gravel spot going up the old Page Mill Road in CA.  Smashed the chain guard in to where it rubbed against the chain.  I had a screwdriver with me, so I took it off, stomped it back into shape (more or less) on the road, reinstalled it, and finished the ride.

I had one with an enclosed chain guard with a hole to oil the chain.

I think if one of you machine shop guys or sheet metal fellas could come up with something doable. May have to fab a new guard out of a sheet of steel or aluminum than we could rattle can paint for not too much. I have not looked at my guard close but will try this weekend, being plastic I'm not sure how sturdy it would be to attach something to it, might work though.

I have sheet metal and aluminum, this might be up to us to mock a couple up.

Why not just use a lube that doesn't sling? There are some available. Amsoil for one makes a spray wax that does a very good lubrication job, and doesn't sling off. Those auto-oilers, for as expensive as they are, make a real mess.

I never tried Amsoil, I'm testing one out for sling-off, see how it performs in the grunge area and lube intervals. Only on a few hundred miles so far.

My chains don't last long, I would have to look up how long the last one was around. It would get tight than loose at various areas of wheel rotation. I tried Lawrence's front sprocket, swapped rear wheels with my other, torched the O-Rings out lubed and it was still there. Changed the chain, problem fixed.
