My tire measures 6.5-7.0 mm tread depth both center and edge.  I plan to put some miles on it soon, as it is finally warming up a bit.

What brand of tire did you guys get? I thought you would have new 9-10/32, that may be close to Lawrence's measurement, have to do some math.

9/32 =0.28125 inches * 25.4mm/inch = 7.14mm, so, yes, we are measuring the same tread depth, to within the probable measurement accuracy on both ends.

It's okay Hoot, I didn't expect anything more from you.

Now I need Lawrence to convert YOUR info so we all can understand. Looks like new is around 9/32, now what does Hoot have.

I know this seems impossible to most readers, but methinks perhaps the venerable Hootmon has made a mistake.  3 cm is more than an inch!!  2.54 cm = 1 inch.

With tread that deep, I would expect the tire to be a bit squirrely, especially in corners...

Maybe he measured the length of the valve stem?

Man, Are you on the ball ore what.. You are correct.. I'm using a CM stick, and my measurement is 3 of the little ticks (mm's?) of the 10 to make one CM so..

or 3 mm and 2.75 mm
or
.3 cm and .275 cm

The real point of the exchange, of course, was to estimate the tread life.  It would appear that Hoot's tread is a little more than half gone.  What is left is roughly 3/7 = .42 or 42% left -- to get all the way to smooth.

I am still not sure what this means as far as tire mileage, because I have reason to suspect that the wear is not linear.  Does anyone know if the wear occurs at a constant rate with mileage?  (Assuming, of course, all other factors, inflation, road surface, etc. are equal - which of course is not true...)

I noticed his measurements were off also, last I remember 1 CM = 10 mm, but it was late last night and I hit the bed.

At this rate Hoot your tire will wear down to 2/32's (wear markers) at around 16,091 miles.

9/32 X 42% = 3.78/32's left.

Used 12,000 miles / 5.22/32's = 2299 miles per 32 second

You have 7/32 of tread before you hit the wear indicator where you are suppose to change your tire.

7 X 2299 = 16,093 unless you push it pass the wear indicator or conditions change.

Lawrence, on some tires wear may not be linear. I will on a dual sport ride this weekend if you ask a question and I don't respond.....I'm gone.

Well this may not be a factor, but as the tire wears, it gets smaller.. Since it is smaller, the surface hits the road more often, so technically it should wear faster as it wears, but by how much not sure it is a real factor..
Kinda like Toilet Paper runs out faster the smaller the roll gets. When it's new there's like 4 sheets per revolution, but at the end there is two or less..
What else am I supposed to think about sitting there.. ???

I have been following this topic for awhile but this is my first post. I have a 2001 Magna that needs new tires and I have decided on a 165/80/15 CT for the rear. I see comments and experience with Nankang and Kuhmo but have not seen many comments on the Vredestein. Please share any experience with this tire. Thanks.
