Hey guys. Thanks for the feed back. Especial the links. I'm going to see if I can get Charles to come over a take a peek before I actually order a stator. I'd like to get someone smarter than me about motorcycles to look at it before I blow money on parts. I'll keep you posted.

Always good to get a second opinion, Guy -- whether on your wife, your dog, or your bike... :cool:

I know Charles will do this anyway, but I would, as a last resort before buying a new stator, take the connector off and make sure the low resistances you are reading are not due to connector failure.  Not the way they usually fail (open, not shorted terminal to terminal is the normal failure mode), but I would look before parting with the $$$ ...

Good luck.

Ok, an update to my issue.  Got battery hooked up to a good charger at a friends house, it took a charge.  Put battery on bike, it started and ran it.  The volt meter was running 12.22 at idle, at 8k the meter was showing a solid 13.08.  Pulled connector off battery, the bike died (had a mechanic tell me that was a no no to do after the fact =P)

Just the topic I needed.  The battery I got 4 months ago is giving me problems, the one before that lasted a year.  What is the "normal" life of a battery?

new years eve was a great day for some riding, so I went out hour+  worked on some slow speed stuff.  Got back home and the bike died right outside the garage.  Instead of pushing it in, I went down my driveway hill to start it, no good.  went down the next hill no start there either.  had to jumpstart with the truck to get the bike back up the hills into the garage.  When I hooked it up to a cheap walmart battery charger it told me the battery was bad.

Overall 13.08 is not enough, did it ever read more? What were the readings at other RPM's?

13.10 was the highest it ever got, it didn't jump around like the mechanic told me to look for that as an indication of the rectifer, or stator? (I don't understand much of this) going out.  I didn't watch the other rpm's, but I can do that tomorrow if that would help.  I have a Magna book somewhere gonna have to find it again.  It would be nice if it was just a fuse that is showing its age, or some wiring that is going bad.

The battery will taking a charge, and the alternator is putting out some kind of power but not enough.  ok, like I said, yall know more than I do.  =)

Where do ya live Lonnie? Will you be at the wrench session?

Yes, you should be hitting over 14 volts.

I live in Tyler, not too far from Greg  =)
He helped me with the shim kit, that was fun.  :)

I went out to give you numbers for comparison.

With my aux. lights off.

RPMs

Idle = 13.33 volts

2000 = 14.41

3000 = 14.22

5000 = 14.19

8000 = 13.86

interesting.  I will check it out tomorrow.

I didn't see a wrenching session listed, but then my bike has been working great.  Since I really don't have a clue I've kinda stayed away.
Although if I were smart I would peek in more often, I might learn something.

Hey Lonnie, you don't have to have anything wrong to make a wrenching, lots of fun just hanging, chilling and limeing :D.

Our wrenching session is really not a wrenching session, it's a wait to see when Greg walks out of the house and says.....hope you're done because....It's Lunch Time!!!

I was hoping I could make it. I'd really like to have thrown Maggie on the trailer and brought her down for ya'll to look at. It just ain't happening.
On Advice from someone smarter than me, I'm going to pull the stator out a check the wiring through the case before I order a new one. I just want to be sure I'm not reading a short in a wiring harness rather than a burned up stator.
Ya'll have fun.
I'd rather be outside than in.

OK, I got the stator out. Thanks for the warning about the magnets. I'd have thought I was missing a bolt if you guys hadn't given me a heads up.
Anyway, it's not much of a proceedure, but here's the picture. Ohh I couldn't find the sea foam, so I used a bottle of Victory Super Carbon Cleaner instead.

I'd rather be outside than in.
